    • A flywheel uninterruptible power supply includes a solid steel cylindrical flywheel levitated for rotation about a vertical axis at tip speeds greater than 250 m/s on magnetic bearings in a low pressure housing. The cylindrical flywheel has a length L and a diameter D, wherein L/D≧1.0. A motor/generator attached to said flywheel accelerates the flywheel and maintains it at operating speed for storage of energy; and decelerates the flywheel for retrieval of the stored energy. The flywheel inertia section operates with a maximum stress of greater than 60% and less than 80% of the material yield stress when spinning at fully charged operating speed. The flywheel is constructed from steel with an ultimate strength greater 150 ksi and a toughness greater than 100 ksi (in)^1/2. The flywheel is a solid steel cylinder that is hardened to centerline structure throughout the axial thickness of the large diameter portion that is greater than 40% martensite. The flywheel is a solid steel cylinder that, in normal, fully charged operation, spins at a speed that would cause a fracture failure no sooner than one hundred thousand cycles between the fully charged normal operating speed and ten percent of that normal operating speed. The flywheel is free of flaws with length greater than ⅛th inch at a diameter less than 20% of the outer diameter of the flywheel.

    • In axial magnetic bearing apparatus in which a rotary disc made of a magnetic material is fixedly attached to a rotating shaft, and electromagnets are disposed on opposite sides of the rotary disc so as to have suitable very small distances therefrom respectively, so as to bear the rotating shaft axially in a non-contact state, a deep groove for forming an air layer having large magneto-resistance is provided all over the outer circumference of the rotary disc. Thus, formation of a magnetic circuit not contributing to position control is relieved, and the weight of the disc is reduced so that the position control performance of the axial magnetic bearing and the natural frequency of a rotor are improved.

    • A flywheel energy storage system that allows high-speed operation with use of mechanical rolling element bearings for radial support of a vertical axis flywheel while they allow it to be mechanically free or unrestrained in the axial direction. Magnetic bearings are used to carry the flywheel weight axially. The axial unconstraint by the mechanical bearings allows the flywheel to freely grow or shrink in axial length from Poisson Effect contraction that occurs when rotating to very high speeds and stress levels as well as from thermal expansions from motor/generator heating or other sources, and also insures that the magnetic bearing carries all of the flywheel weight, thus greatly extending the life of the mechanical bearings. Radially compliant elements mechanically in series with the mechanical bearings provide for a lower radial stiffness, which allows the flywheel to traverse its rigid body resonance at a low speed. Above that speed, the flywheel spins about its mass center instead of the geometric center and radial loading on the bearing becomes much lower.

    • A magnetic thrust bearing having a high speed rotation capability and low cost construction. The magnetic thrust bearing has permanent magnets to provide bias flux. The magnetic circuits of the control flux and bias fluxes are substantially non-coincident, which allows for a low reluctance and efficient path for the control flux.     • A method and apparatus for supporting a rotor in a free state with respect to a stator with superconducting bearings. The apparatus has a rotor with closed rotor loops mounted on the rotor shaft and which are formed of a material having zero electrical resistance at a temperature below a superconductivity transition temperature. A stator encloses the rotor and has closed stator loops formed of the zero electrical resistance material and angularly positioned on the stator about the closed rotor loops. The closed rotor and stator loops are cooled to a temperature below the superconductivity transition temperature of the loop material and energized to create a magnetic flux between the ones of the closed rotor and stator loops. Apparatus for centering and securing the rotor within the stator is released to enable the rotor to move in the free state with respect to the stator.
