    • A combined direct current DC power transmission and heating system is provided. The system includes a rectifier station configured to generate a DC link current. The system also includes a downstream converter station positioned remotely from the rectifier station. The downstream converter station is configured to generate power supplied to an electrical load using at least a portion of the DC link current. The system also includes a return conductor electrically coupled to the rectifier station and the downstream converter station. The return conductor is configured to transmit a return current from the downstream converter station to the rectifier station. The return conductor is also configured to generate heat from resistive losses induced by the return current; and conduct the heat generated by the return current to a fluid being transported from a proximity of the downstream converter station to a proximity of the rectifier station.

    • A unity power factor converter capable of effecting either inversion (dc-to-dc) or rectification (ac-to-dc), and capable of providing bilateral power control from a DC source (or load) through an AC transmission line to a DC load (or source) for power flow in either direction, is comprised of comparators for comparing the AC current i with an AC signal i.sub.ref (or its phase inversion) derived from the AC ports to generate control signals to operate a switch control circuit for high speed switching to shape the AC current waveform to a sine waveform, and synchronize it in phase and frequency with the AC voltage at the AC ports, by selectively switching the connections to a series inductor as required to increase or decrease the current i.

    • Control pulse transmission device for transmitting control pulses of a certain length from a control pulse generator to the control electrode of a rectifier. Said transmission device comprises an impulse transformer and a second transformer, each transformer having a primary winding, a secondary winding and a biasing winding. The primary winding of the impulse transformer is connected to said pulse generator; the secondary winding of the impulse transformer is connected to the control electrode of an extinguishable thyristor connected in series with the primary winding of the second transformer and a voltage source; the secondary winding of said second transformer is connected to the control electrode of said rectifier.
