    • Herein described is a bicycle comprising a frame, a drive wheel and a pedal crank/pedal assembly which transmits mechanical energy to the drive wheel by means of a transmission system which comprises: a tank containing a hydraulic fluid; a hydraulic circuit in which the hydraulic fluid flows; a hydraulic pump, actuated by the pedal crank/pedal assembly and configured to pump the hydraulic fluid through the hydraulic circuit; at least one hydraulic actuator, arranged along the hydraulic circuit and configured to transform the hydraulic energy supplied by the hydraulic pump to the hydraulic fluid into mechanical energy; and a drive shaft, connected to the hydraulic actuator and configured to transfer the mechanical energy generated by the hydraulic actuator to the drive wheel. The hydraulic pump is connected to an electric motor whose rotational speed, as well as the operating parameters of the hydraulic pump, are controlled by a circuit board. The bicycle comprises at least one first pedal frequency sensor, which controls the electric motor by modulating its rotational speed, so as to make the hydraulic pump rotate more or less rapidly in order to force the circulation of the hydraulic fluid in the hydraulic circuit, facilitating pedalling, and at least one second power sensor, which measures the power applied by the cyclist to the pedal crank/pedal assembly, so as to accordingly adjust the power supplied by the electric motor to drive the hydraulic pump.

    • A hydraulically driven bicycle frame with two axle members coupled to the bicycle frame and front and rear wheels mounted on such axles for rotation about the axis of the respective axle and a pair of pedals mounted on a pedal drive shaft coupled to the bicycle frame for rotation for applying manual power for operating the hydraulic system of the bicycle. The hydraulically driven bicycle has a hydraulic pump mechanism and a hydraulic drive mechanism. The hydraulic pump mechanism is operated by rotational movement of the pedal drive shaft. The hydraulic pump mechanism includes a pump housing having two sectional pump housing members that form a pump chamber between them. The two sectional pump housing members are capable of relative movement with respect to each other so that the pump chamber is capable of being varied in size for varying the flow of fluid through the pump mechanism. The hydraulic drive mechanism is driven by the fluid pump by the pump system and is coupled to one of the wheels of the bicycle for providing a rotational force to such wheel. The hydraulic drive mechanism includes a drive housing having two sectional drive housing members which form a drive chamber between them. The two sectional drive members are capable of relative movement with respect to each other so that the drive chamber is capable of being varied in size for varying the flow of fluid through the hydraulic drive mechanism. The hydraulic pump mechanism and the hydraulic drive mechanism are interconnected by fluid circulating tubes so that a closed hydraulic system is constructed on the bicycle.

    • A hydraulic drive system and a bicycle having such system as its drive train, the system including a pump, preferably a vane pump, operably connected to the bicycle pedal crank, the pump delivering pressurized fluid to a hydraulic motor operably connected to the wheel or mechanism to be driven, e.g., the bicycle drive wheel. The pump has an impeller eccentrically disposed in a housing, and a piston-cylinder mechanism is provided to change the eccentricity of the pump impeller with respect to the pump housing as a function of hydraulic system pressure, to thereby maintain a constant input force, e.g., pedal pressure, and rotation rate, for a wide range of speeds. The motor also has an impeller eccentrically disposed in a housing, and a spacer bar connected between the pump and motor housings automatically adjusts the motor impeller eccentricity with changes in the pump impeller eccentricity, thereby further maintaining constant pedal pressure and rotation rate for a wide range of speeds. A pretensioned spring opposes the movement of the piston in the cylinder, thereby requiring that a predetermined pedal pressure level be exerted before the pump and motor eccentricities will change. A lever is provided for manually setting, and varying, the pretension of the spring to thereby set the pedal pressure level at which the pump and motor impeller eccentricities will be charged.

    • A bicycle that is powered by a hydraulic motor operatively associated with the rear wheel of the vehicle, with the actuation being by fluid under pressure delivered to the motor by a first rotary pump actuated by the feet of the rider, and a second pump that is energized by reciprocal up and down movement of the handle bars of the vehicle. The first and second pumps may be operated either independently or jointly. The bicycle includes a reservoir for hydraulic fluid and an accumulator for hydraulic fluid that is maintained in a pressurized condition therein. A manually operated, multiposition valve mounted on the vehicle permits the rider to control the flow of the hydraulic fluid. When the valve is in a first position and either the first or second pump actuated, hydraulic fluid is drawn from the reservoir, discharged through the motor to rotate the rear wheel of the vehicle, and the fluid thereafter discharged back to the reservoir. When the bicycle is coasting downhill, and the valve is placed in a second position, the motor temporarily acts as a pump, and forces hydraulic fluid into the accumulator and be pressurized therein. Pressurized fluid from the reservoir is released to discharge to the motor to rotate the latter and the rear wheel of the vehicle, when the valve is placed in a third position. A manually operated throttle valve controls the flow of hydraulic fluid from the discharge opening of the pump prior to the fluid returning to the reservoir. The throttle valve is normally open, but as it is gradually closed by the rider, the throttle valve restricts the flow of fluid discharging from the motor and as a result the motor acting as a brake to slow down the movement of the bicycle. When the throttle valve is completely closed, fluid cannot discharge from the motor, and the rear wheel cannot rotate relative to the frame of the bicycle and will actually skid on the supporting surface.
