    • A drill stem guide and cover system is designed to guide a drill stem used in coke cutting operations. After a cutting tool and drill stem are inserted into a coke drum, covers close, forming a passageway small enough that it prevents the cutting tool on the end of the drill stem from being removed but large enough to allow movement of the drill stem. The drill stem moves within the passageway to allow the cutting tool to be raised and lowered as needed. The closed covers provide protection from the release of pressurized or explosive gases while the coke cutting operation is taking place. The covers can be automated so that an operator can control them from a safe distance, and the covers can be remotely opened for the removal of the drill stem and cutting tool when coke cutting operations are not taking place.

    • In a process for recovery of values contained in solid carbonaceous material, a solid carbonaceous material is comminuted and then treated at an elevated temperature in a pretreatment zone with a first capping agent which is at treating conditions either a liquid or a gas. The treating conditions are such that the first capping agent is sorbed by the solid particulate carbonaceous material. The solid particulate carbonaceous material containing the sorbed first capping agent is then subjected to pyrolysis in the presence of a second capping agent, and preferably in the presence of a solid particulate source of heat and a transport gas in a transport flash pyrolysis reactor, to form a pyrolysis product stream. The solid particulate carbonaceous feed material is pyrolyzed and newly formed volatilized hydrocarbon free radicals are substantially simultaneously terminated by the sorbed first capping agent, or the second capping agent as such radicals are formed, to form a pyrolysis product stream. The pyrolysis product stream contains a gaseous mixture and particulate solids which are separated from the gaseous mixture to form a substantially particulate solids-free gaseous mixture stream which contains capping agent terminated volatilized hydrocarbon free radicals, hydrogen depleted capping agents, pyrolysis product vapors and a transport gas.Hydrocarbons of four or more carbon atoms in the gaseous mixture stream are condensed. A liquid stream containing the stabilized liquid product is then treated or separated into various fractions. A liquid containing the hydrogen depleted capping agents is hydrogenated to form regenerated capping agents, at least a portion of which is recycled to the pretreatment zone and at least another portion is recycled to the pyrolysis zone. In another embodiment the capping agents are produced by the process, separated from the liquid product mixture, and recycled.

    • A main carriage is displaceable in a transport direction along rails next to the unloading side of a battery of coking chambers. A substantially smaller auxiliary frame is displaceable on the main frame in the same transport direction as the main frame and carries several operating units including a door-removing device, a doorframe cleaner and a guide for conducting coke pushed from the opposite side out of the chamber into a quenching wagon next to the battery. In addition a door cleaner may be provided on the main frame together with a chain conveyor or the like having one flight extending on the main frame in its transport direction next to the battery and another flight extending across the main frame perpendicular to the transport direction so as to empty into the quenching car. In operation the main frame is moved into an approach position of approximate confrontation of the operating units with a selected coking chamber and the auxiliary frame is then displaced exactly to position the devices sequentially in front of the door of the chamber for unloading a charge of cokefied coal.

    • A safe, efficient and repetitively operable coke vessel decoking system is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment the closed system comprises a coker vessel pressure-tightly sealed to a top head system, which includes a closure housing with a laterally moveable horizontal closure member therein and a cutting head enclosure, which further comprises a drill stem guide, an access door, and a cutting assembly mounted therein. A novel feature of the invention is a steam purge/blocking system whereby steam pressure is maintained in the closure housing during the coking cycle to maintain seal integrity. Personnel safety during decoking operations is greatly enhanced by eliminating dangerous manual tasks associated with the prior art such as unbolting and removing top head devices. The system can be remotely and repetitively operated through numerous coking/decoking cycles without removal of any system element.
