    • Continuous process for producing carbon bisulfide by reaction of sulfur and hydrocarbon gas containing a multi-carbon hydrocarbon having at least three carbon atoms at a pressure in the range of 3.5 to 12 atmospheres. A stream of sulfur at a temperature of at least 650*C and a stream of the hydrocarbon gas are fed into a reaction zone continuously. The temperatures and rates of flow of said vapor and gas are such that the calculated mixing temperature thereof is in the range of about 585* to 700*C., and the flow conditions and mixing conditions of said gas and vapor streams are such that the hydrocarbon gas becomes substantially completely mixed with the sulfur vapor before the hydrocarbon comes into contact with a wall of the reaction zone.

    • A crane having an upper section removable from a base section is disclosed. The upper section of the crane is supported on an anti-friction bearing which has an outer race member secured to the base section. The inner race member of the bearing surrounds a depending ring portion of the upper section. The upper section ring portion and the inner race member of the bearing have teeth which, when shifted to one relative angular position, serve to lock the upper section of the crane to the base section thereof, but which, when shifted to another relative angular position, release the upper section from the base section. Power rams effect relative angular shifting of the toothed members. A pinion mounted in the upper section meshes with gear teeth on the outer race member of the bearing to rotate the upper section of the crane on the base section.

    • An article feeder having a frame mounted on a base is disclosed. A container which receives and dispenses articles is secured to the frame. The frame and container assembly constitute one mass of a two mass system, and the base constitutes the other mass of the system. Several sets of main leaf springs are secured by clamps between the frame and the base to support the frame and container for rotational oscillation by a motor mounted on the base. A set of auxiliary leaf springs, smaller than the main leaf springs, is secured to the clamps of each set of main leaf springs and acts in parallel with each set of main leaf springs to provide the total spring coupling between the frame and container assembly and the base. The auxiliary leaf springs are added or removed individually to change the torsional natural frequency of the two mass system in small increments without disturbing the sets of main leaf springs.

    • A windrowing machine includes a main rake and a reciprocable slide rake projecting outwardly and forwardly from the chassis of a mobile vehicle toward a row of trees being harvested. The rakes are partially supported in operative windrowing position by a generally horizontal boom which is hydraulically raised or lowered as required. The slide rake is pivotally connected to the boom and has its inner rear end supported by a caster wheel and its diagonally opposite outer forward end supported by a rotary depth control disc of a windrowing brush and depth control unit. The brush and depth control unit is driven by power means that includes a shaft which drives the brush and also drives the flat depth control disc. The disc is connected to the drive shaft of the power means by a universal joint. The plane of the brush is angled downwardly and forwardly approximately 10* relative to the horizontal for engaging and sweeping the fruit inwardly from its path, while the rotating disc assumes the average inclination of uneven soil upon which it rests by flattening the soil due to its rotation and universal mounting.

    • This machine straps a package with flexible tape strapping. A strap is initially fed by feed and tension wheels around the yoke and against a stop with which a gripper clamps the free end of the strap against an anvil, the feed is reversed to remove a slack loop in the strap at the feed mechanism and the feed mechanism is automatically stopped. Thereafter, a tensioning valve is operated to reactivate the feed mechanism so as to slip the strap out of the yoke, tension the strap around the package and join the ends of the strap after tensioning. Occasionally the apparatus malfunctions to produce a short feed, wherein during the initial feeding operation, the strap does not reach the gripper so that even though the gripper closes against its anvil, when the feed mechanism is restarted to tension the strap, the strap is pulled out of the yoke, instead of being tensioned around the package and hence must be rethreaded. To prevent this, an air orifice is provided at the gripper anvil which orifice is not covered by the free end of the strap when the aforesaid short, feed malfunction occurred, and the gripper was closed and this short feed condition prevents restarting of the feed mechanism in the tensioning direction when the aforesaid valve is operated to initiate tensioning. Thus, the strap is not withdrawn from the yoke and after the obstruction is cleared the strap need not be re-threaded through the machine.

    • A machine for dispensing a flowable topping material onto a series of continuously moving circular pizza dough shells, and for adding other topping materials at one or more downstream dispensing stations. A power driven dispensing valve is mounted over the conveying path of the pizza dough shells, and applies a circular pattern of tomato paste sauce onto each passing shell. A speedup conveyor assumes support of the shells to space them apart, and each shell is then momentarily interrupted under a hopper at each of two stations where a topping material such as ground meat, grated cheese or other foodstuffs are applied. With this arrangement, the discharge rate of completed pizzas is the same rate with which the tomato paste sauce is applied.

    • A portable drilling machine has a forwardly extending horizontal platform upon which is pivotally mounted a pair of spaced forwardly extending frames. The frames are arranged on the horizontal platform to pivot toward and away from each other in a horizontal plane. Each frame carries a boom assembly having front end and rear end portions. The boom assembly front end portion supports a drill unit. The boom assembly is operable to raise the drill unit in a linear vertical path while the frame is arranged to move the boom assembly and the drill unit in a horizontal plane. A canopy assembly having front end and rear end portions is positioned in overlying relationship with the frame and boom assembly and includes a portion covered with an expanded metal screen positioned adjacent the drill unit. The front end portion is pivotally connected to an extensible rod that is concentrically positioned within a lift cylinder rigidly mounted to the frame. Actuation of the lift cylinder extends the rod vertically upwardly to move the front end portion in a vertical plane. The rear end portion is rotatably mounted to the frame and is operable upon actuation of the lift cylinder to move longitudinally in a linear horizontal path on the frame to permit linear vertical movement of the front end portion. With this arrangement, the canopy assembly is moved in a linear vertical path to a preselected height above the portable drilling machine and protects the drill operator during the drilling operation.
