    • A disk drive dynamic wave shaper (DWS) write driver includes a write current generator that produces a baseline output current for the write current pulses and an overshoot current generator that produces an overshoot current with different values. The overshoot current is added to the baseline current, with the value of the overshoot current amplitude (OSA) being selected in response to the frequency of transitions in the write data signal. The write driver includes logic circuitry that detects the pattern of transitions. Transitions that are immediately followed by a transition will receive a larger-than-nominal OSA1, transitions that are not immediately followed by a transition and that are not preceded by a long sequence of non-transitions will receive a nominal OSA2, and transitions after longer sequences of non-transitions will receive a smaller-than-nominal OSA3.

    • According to one embodiment, a system for processing data includes an equalizer configured to use servo coefficients for processing servo data and data coefficients for processing non-servo data, wherein the equalizer includes a finite impulse response (FIR) filter configured to process data read with a magnetic tape channel using the servo coefficients to generate equalized data, one or more low-pass filters with aggressive frequency characteristics configured to filter the equalized data to output filtered data, the one or more low-pass filters with aggressive frequency characteristics being configured to remove high frequency noise from the equalized data, a peak detector configured to process peaks in a waveform of the filtered data, and at least one servo pattern detector configured to detect a servo pattern in the filtered data.     • A method for detecting a contact event between a transducer and a recording medium is disclosed. The method includes positioning a transducer with respect to a recording medium, where the transducer includes a writer, a reader, a heater, and a thermally responsive sensor. The method further includes applying power to the heater to establish a fly height of the transducer; supplying a bias current through the thermally responsive sensor to generate a bias signal; measuring a root mean square (RMS) voltage VRMS of the thermally responsive sensor based on the bias signal; determining a threshold voltage VT; and detecting a contact event between the transducer and the medium based on VRMS being greater than VT.
