摘要： A printer (30) is provided with a smart card (10) encoding device (13) that is externally accessible. The smart card (10) is a key with an integrated circuit (50) including a memory (10A) that will retain a discrete password and other digital information. The password on the smart card key (10) must be compared to a password stored in the printer memory (30A, 30B) before printing operations will be permitted. The digital information in the smart card key memory (10A) can include marks (122) or graphics that would indicate that the cards being printed (120) by the printer (30) are secured cards and authorized cards. The information will be printed from the smart card key memory (10A) only when the passwords match so that the discrete information on the smart card key (10) can be used for driving the printer (30) for printing this information. The printer (30) is made into a high security printer by permitting overriding of the password only upon the generating of identical numbers from separated algorithms, one in the printer memory (30A) and one at a secure location.

摘要： The present invention is directed to a method of controlling a thermal printhead (18) of an identification card printing system (10) to provide improved image sharpness. In one step (32) of the method a pixel level of a non-compensated pixel PR,C is adjusted based upon a pixel level of one or more proximal pixel levels to form a compensated pixel P'R,C. In another step (34) of the method, the thermal printhead (18) is controlled to print the compensated pixel P'R,C. The present invention is further directed to an identification card printing system (10) which utilizes the above-described method to improve contrast in images printed with a thermal printhead (18).

摘要： A printer (10) for printing information on images on a substrate (72) such as an identification card (72) in multiple colors has an intermediate transfer film or web (82) on which a reverse image is printed. The printer (10) has a lamination station (40) where the image is transferred to a substrate, such as an identification card (72). The intermediate transfer film or web (82) is moved back and forth, and the intermediate transfer film or web (82) has slack occurring in it between the printing station (34) and the lamination station (40). The slack is taken up with spring loaded rollers (124, 126) to permit operation of the printer head (56) and the lamination station (40) at the same time. Additionally, the printer (10) is made into modules (24, 27, 32, 34, 36) that are movable for easy access to interior components and to expose film or web paths that permits installing both the print film or web (54) and the intermediate transfer film or web (82) without threading it through enclosed openings.
