    • An optical data recording medium (100) is disclosed herein. The optical data recording medium (100) includes a substrate (220), and at least one groove (G) formed in a surface (222) thereof. The groove(s) (G) have a groove depth (D) ranging from about 30 nm to about 40 nm and a groove width (W) ranging from about 140 nm to about 250 nm. A reflector layer (231 ) having a thickness ranging from about 50 nm to about 120 nm is established on the substrate (220), and a dye coating (230) is established on the reflector layer (231 ). The dye coating (230) includes an absorber (239) having a light absorption maxima within a 405 nm waveband, and a contrast agent (240) configured to undergo a chemical or physical change upon receiving energy from the absorber (239) and to produce an optical contrast at the 405 nm waveband. A barrier layer (236) having a thickness ranging from about 5 nm to about 50 nm is established on the dye coating (230).

    • A data storage medium such as an optical disc (100) with separate image and data tracks, and a method and apparatus for forming the same. The medium has a user data storage area (112) with a data track to store user data, and a non-user data image track to store human readable information to form a watermark (104, 114) interspersed with user data. Preferably, the data track (116) forms a portion of a first spiral (120) and the image track (118) forms a portion of a distinct second spiral (122) nested within the first spiral. Alternatively, the data and image tracks are nested concentric circles. An increased track pitch is preferably provided for the data tracks in the data storage area adjacent the watermark to accommodate the intervening image tracks, and a reduced track pitch between data tracks is provided elsewhere. The medium can be pre-recorded or recordable.

    • An optical disc (3) for storing data is provided with a label material layer (8) on a laser entry side of the disc (3). The label material layer (8) does not impede reading data from or writing data onto the disc (3). Reflection or absorption of light in the visual spectrum by the label material in the label material layer (8) is affectable by illuminating the label material according to a label pattern. Changing the reflection or absorption results in a local change of color. The contrast that is herewith applied to the label material layer (8) can be used for creating visual information, such as text or images for forming a label. Furthermore a device (52) is provided for applying a label to the laser entry side of an optical disc (3). The device (52) comprises means for producing a laser beam (21) for illuminating the label material layer (8) according to a label pattern.
