    • A copier or a printer (10) includes a controller 16/30 with a rendering algorithm that groups sets of adjacent pixels into sets of adjacent cells where each cell corresponds to a halftone dot of an image. The algorithm operates in conjunction with a gray scale printhead (22). In sending data to the printhead, the controller (16) parses a scanned image and set the exposure for each pixel in accordance with a growth and density program. The algorithm selectively grows halftone dots from zero size to a desired size equal to or less than a maximum size. It repeats this step for the rest of the pixels until the cell is at its desired size and at an initial density. If a higher density is desired, the algorithm selectively adjusts the fully grown cells by sequentially increasing the level of exposure of each pixel in the cell. The image is developed with developer including a hard magnetic carrier and toner.

    • Clock sources driving piezoelectric crystals are synchronised by a method and system in which target adapter boards (TABs 20a-20d) and fiber optic links (30, 32, 34a-34c) couple together plural printheads (12a-12d) in a daisy-chain configuration; an encoder device (35) of a controller (10) embeds a first clock signal in data and transmits the data to the printheads on the daisy-chain; a clock generating circuit of each TAB derives a second clock signal from the data, which is directly proportional to the first clock signal; and each printhead drives its corresponding piezoelectric crystal with the second clock signal. Time taken for data to propagate to each printhead is determined and the controller adjusts the phase of each second clock signal to reflect the propagation time by setting a preload register to a setting directly proportional to the position of a corresponding printhead in the chain.

    • A method of multi-tone printing employs a drop-on-demand printing apparatus (100) for depositing ink droplets from an array of channels (104) on printing element areas of a substrate (111) which is movable relatively to said apparatus. The channels' length and nozzle location and dimensions afford each channel with a high longitudinal resonant frequency and electrically actuable means (110, 112, 114, 116, 118) supply energy pulses to a selected band of channels at or near the resonant frequency of the channels to deposit from each selected channel in the corresponding printing element area of the substrate a number of drops equal to the number of pulses applied thereto, the number of pulses applied being dependent on the tone of printing required. Droplet ejection from even numbered channels is in anti-phase at the resonant frequency with droplet ejection from odd numbered channels.

    • A binary architectured LED printhead (25, 125) is driven in accordance with a multiple addressable, i.e., multiple sublines of recording, scheme to record grey level pixels. Respective sublines are recorded using a series of pulses that form a set of binary-weighted exposure strobe durations. Exposure durations for recording successive strobed sublines with a particular LED (20, 120) are ordered so that larger duration strobe pulses are followed by shorter duration strobe pulses. A plurality of strobe enable lines are provided to which respective recording elements are connected. A pulse from this set is generated during a subline exposure period on each enable line with each enable line having a pulse generated thereon that is of a different duration than that generated on the other enabling lines during the subline recording period and wherein during a subline exposure period the respective pulses on the enabling lines are substantially nonconcurrent. In one embodiment a series of data bits are formatted for presentation to the printhead (125) by a retransmit line buffer (206, 208) which transmits n times the data of one line of grey level pixels represented by n bits each to a process correction look-up table (220, 222). Another look-up table (216, 218) provides a signal to the process look-up table as to the intensity characteristics of the particular LED which is to print the pixel. The corrected grey level data is then input to a multiplexer (228, 230) which selects one of the n bits for printing in accordance with count signals related to the binary weight of the recording clock pulses.

    • A thermal printer is disclosed which is adapted to form an image on a thermal print medium of a type in which a donor element transfers dye to a receiver element upon receipt of a sufficient amount of thermal energy. The printer includes a plurality of diode lasers (36) which can be individually modulated to supply energy to selected dots on the medium in accordance with an information signal. The print head (20) of the printer includes a fiber optic array (30) having a plurality of optical fibers (31) coupled to the diode lasers (36). The thermal print medium is supported on a rotatable drum (12), and the fiber optic array (30) is movable relative to the drum. In order to prevent banding in an image produced on the print medium, the two outside fibers in the array are used for preheating and postheating of inner scan lines.
