    • A dimmer switch (110-x, 200, 400, 600, 700A, 700B,1200) adapted to be coupled to an alternating current (AC) source and to a load so as to control an amount of power delivered from the AC source to the load, the dimmer switch may include: a triode for AC (TRIAC) (208, 408, 612) coupled between the AC source and the load, and which when triggered conducts to deliver a controlled amount of power from the AC source to the load for a corresponding half-cycle of one or more half cycles of the AC source. The dimmer switch may include first and second triggering circuits (606, 608) configured to trigger the TRIAC when charged after being enabled. One or more of the triggering circuits may be a self-balancing triggering circuit. The dimmer switch may further include a controller (412, 602, 1210) which selects and thereafter enables one or more of the first or second triggering circuits.

    • A dimmer switch for controlling the intensity of a dimmable screw-in compact fluorescent lamp provides smooth dimming of the fluorescent lamp and prevents flickering of the lamp due to multiple re-strikes. The dimmer switch prevents multiple re-strikes by avoiding multiple firings of a controllably conductive switching device of the dimmer circuit by limiting the high-end light intensity of the fluorescent lamp. Specifically, the dimmer switch limits the length of a conduction interval of the controllably conductive switching device to less than approximately 75% of each half-cycle. The dimmer switch may include a user-accessible adjustment actuator for changing the dimmer switch between an incandescent operating mode and a screw-in compact fluorescent mode. The dimmer switch may also be operable to automatically change the dimmer switch between the incandescent operating mode and the screw-in compact fluorescent mode by detecting the occurrence of the multiple firings of the controllably conductive switching device.

    • A power regulator (20) for use with an AC power source includes a voltage converter (24) having a first input (26) and a second input (29). The controller (22) generates the control signal indicative of the instantaneous difference between the regulator output signal and the amplitude of the substantially sinusoidal reference signal. The amplitude of the substantially sinusoidal reference signal is independent of the amplitude of the AC power source and the amplitude of the regulator output signal.
