    • A system for milking a group of milking animals comprises an accommodation space in which the animals can walk around, multiple milking stations and a connection system for automatic connection of milking cups to the teats of an animal present in a milking station. Expulsion means are provided that can be activated by a control system in the milking stations to give an expulsion stimulus to a milking animal present in a milking station, to leave said milking station. The control system is configured to activate the expulsion means such that the expulsion stimulus is given to each milking animal present in one of the milking stations on condition that (i) said milking animal fulfils a predefined expulsion criterion, and (ii) all other milking stations are occupied by other milking animals.

    • The invention relations to a method of determining milk characteristics for individual animals within a cohort of milking animals, where the method is characterised by the steps of: a) recording individual identification of animals present at a milking shed for a milking event; b) recording the timing of the milking event for individual animals; c) measuring at least one milk characteristic of milk collected from the cohort of milking animals; d) correlating the identification of an individual animal with the timing of the milking event to develop a profile of one or more milk characteristics for the individual animal. A system for implementing the method is also claimed. The inventive method and system has particular application for determination of characteristics of milk from a selected animal from a group of animals, particularly, but not limited to, milk yield, based on measurement of an ensemble of milk production from a group of animals, such as a dairy herd or cohort of dairy cows.

    • A modular teat cup assembly (1) for use with a milking machine for milking cows. The modular teat cup assembly (1) comprises a hollow tubular shell (2) together with a cartridge assembly slidably received within the shell. The cartridge assembly (3) includes a spool-shaped liner (18) and a framework comprising a pair of opposing sleeve members for supporting the liner. The sleeve members are movable between an open position to permit removal and replacement of the liner, and a closed position for supporting the liner therebetween. A cap removably mounted on the bottom of the shell holds the cartridge assembly within the shell and is used to attach a milking tube in the conventional manner. A head piece includes a mouth for receiving a cow's teat, and is snapped onto the upper end of the shell to complete the modular assembly.
