    • A tray (1-8) for inserting a memory card into a portable computer is described. The tray (1-8) facilitates complete insertion of the memory card into the computer and optimum electrical interconnection between the memory card and the computer interior. The tray (1-8) is dimensioned such that it creates a tight seal with the computer housing and provides a coplanar fit with the exterior of the computer housing. No portions of the tray (1-8) or memory card protrude beyond the computer housing, thereby improving the durability, maneuverability, and compactness of the portable computer. A stop mechanism (4, 7) restrains the tray within the housing when the tray (1-8) is opened. A memory card can easily be placed thereinto or removed therefrom when the tray (1-8) is opened and yet the tray (1-8) does not become separated from the computer and lost.

    • A memory card connector includes an interior cavity for receiving a memory card. An insulating housing has a rear terminal-mounting section and at least one longitudinal side wall section extending forwardly from one end of the rear section. A metal shell covers at least a portion of the insulating housing and includes a cover plate overlying at least a portion of the longitudinal side wall section of the housing An engaging structure includes an engaging projection on one of the cover plate of the metal shell or the top surface of the side wall section of the housing extending into an engaging opening in the other of the cover plate or top surface to prevent relative movement therebetween in a plane generally parallel to the cover plate and top surface. A slight clearance is provided between the engaging projection and the engaging opening to avoid creating residual stresses in the housing.

The SD memory card socket includes guide pieces formed on an edge of a connector housing facing a side of the SD memory card so as to form a guide slot therebetween in a longitudinal direction. A slider moves forward and backward in the longitudinal direction along the guide slot when inserting and removing the SD memory card. The slider has a fixing hole formed at a front end and a hidden hole formed at a rear end, the hidden hole being open in a downward direction. A first end of a locking bar is inserted into the fixing hole to allow the locking bar to rotate about the fixing hole, while a second end of the locking bar is inserted into the hidden hole to allow the second end to protrude out of the hidden hole when rotated about the fixing hole. A locking release guide protrusion is formed on an inner face of a guide piece, so as to guide a horizontal part of the locking bar to urge the second end of the locking bar toward insertion into the hidden hole when the slider moves to a home position.

    • A method and apparatus for retaining an electronic function card (30) in the receptacle of a host data processing system (host socket, 40) is described. The present invention exerts a retention force on the card (30) in addition to the frictional forces exerted on each of the connector contacts inserted into the host socket. By increasing the retention forces exerted on an electronic function inserted during a mechanical shock event is reduced. The present invention also provides tactile and/or auditory feedback to the user to indicate when the card is fully inserted into the host socket. Further, a card extractor (110) may be coupled to the retainer of the present invention. When disengaged, the card extractor will release the retention force on the card and the card may be easily removed from the host socket.
