    • A mixer apparatus (60), such as an integrated circuit (IC) mixer is provided for improving the physical layout of devices containing mixers. The mixer includes a multiplier (62) with an input port (64), an output port (66), a first switchable local oscillator input port (68) and a second switchable local oscillator input port (72). The dual switchable local oscillator ports are located on either side of the mixer, between the input side and the output side. The dual switchable local oscillator ports allow the mixer to provide more flexibility in integrated circuit and printed circuit board design layouts involving mixer apparatus. For example, in dual channel devices, a local oscillator can be coupled to a pair of the mixers using transmission lines that do not have to be routed around the integrated circuit, to a different level of the printed circuit board or underneath one of the mixers.

    • A method of setting-up machine vision equipment is disclosed. The equipment includes a camera defining a field of view, processing means for determining physical properties of a test object, and first supporting means for supporting a test object at a predetermined distance from the camera within the field of view. The method is characterised by providing second supporting means for supporting a reference object, placing a reference object having at least one known dimension on the second supporting means, moving one or more of the cameras, the first supporting means and the second supporting means to bring the reference object within the field of view at the predetermined distance from the camera, imaging the reference object to obtain an image, and processing the image to determine the optimum configuration of the imaging means, and adjusting the imaging means configuration to the optimum configuration.

    • A starter motor includes an electric motor, an epicyclic reduction gear mechanism driven by the electric motor, and a pinion gear wheel driven from the output member of the epicyclic reduction gear mechanism. The output member of the epicyclic gear mechanism is the planetary gear carrier of the mechanism and the annular gear of the mechanism is held against rotation relative to the frame of the starter motor by a torque limiting clutch, which slips when the annular gear is subjected to a torque in the direction opposite to that to which it is subjected during cranking of the associated engine, and in excess of a predetermined value, thereby limiting the torque to which the epicyclic gear mechanism and the remainder of the starter motor drive train is subjected.

    • An electrical switch is for use in an internal combustion engine starting mechanism of the kind including a starter motor, a pinion driven by the starter motor and engageable with a toothed wheel on the engine, and a solenoid for moving the pinion into engagement with the toothed wheel, the solenoid including an armature having an inner part for moving the pinion and an outer part coupled to the inner part. A switch of this kind includes a housing and first, second and third fixed contacts secured in the housing in spaced relationship and lying in a common plane. A movable carrier is mounted for movement in a direction at right angles to the plane of the fixed contacts and a conductive bridging piece is resiliently mounted on the carrier and is urged to lie in a plane parallel with the plane of the fixed contacts. A sleeve slidably mounted in the housing is engaged at one end with the carrier and projects at its other end from the housing for engagement with the outer part of the armature. A push rod is slidable within the sleeve and projects at one end from the sleeve for engagement by the inner part of the armature, resilient means urging the sleeve and the push rod outwardly. A movable latch member is movable by the push rod and is resiliently urged to a position wherein it projects above the plane of the fixed contacts to prevent the bridging piece engaging the third fixed contact during movement of the carrier towards the fixed contacts. The arrangement is such that in use upon energization of the solenoid the outer part of the armature moves the carrier through the sleeve towards the fixed contacts, the bridging piece engaging the latch member and thus being tilted relative to the carrier during further movement of the carrier. The bridging piece in its tilted condition engages the first and second fixed contacts to complete a first circuit of the starter motor and the latch member is then moved by the push rod when the pinion of the starter motor is fully engaged with the toothed wheel of the engine to permit the bridging piece to return to its original position with respect to the carrier so as to engage the third fixed contact to complete a second circuit of the starter motor. The second circuit when completed causes energization of the starter motor at a full torque value while completion of the first circuit causes energization of the starter motor at a reduced torque value.

    • The present invention provides methods and apparatus for calibrating and controlling output power levels in a broadband communication system. The power level of an intermediate frequency (IF) signal may be varied at a first attenuator. The IF signal from the first attenuator may be frequency converted at a mixer to provide a desired transmit frequency converted signal. The power level of the frequency converted signal may be adjusted at a second attenuator. The signal may be sampled after the second attenuator in order to detect its output power level. The detected output power level may be compared with a reference level to obtain a difference signal. The difference signal may be used in a feedback loop to adjust the power level of the signal output from the first attenuator so that a constant output power level is maintained. Methods and apparatus for calibrating output power levels are also provided.
