摘要： An apparatus for deploying an air bag through an automotive dash panel includes an air bag door integrally formed in the panel and defined by a frangible edge of reduced cross section. A dispenser supports the air bag behind the door. A metal reaction plate is positioned between the air bag and the door. When the air bag inflates it forces the reaction plate to bend around a horizontal hinge line. As the reaction plate rotates it concentrates inflation force along a lower portion of the frangible door edge. This helps predictably separate the door from the dash panel by tearing along the lower door edge and allowing the tear to propagate up two side edges. In one embodiment, the tear also propagates across an upper edge to completely separate the door from the panel. At least one, and preferably two or three tethers limit how far the door can travel during air bag inflation. A stop member may be included to limit reaction plate bending. After deployment, the reaction plate remains in a position that prevents the door from returning to its original position.

摘要： An air bag cover (14) for use in a supplement inflatable restraint system includes an air bag cover skin made of a polymeric material. The cover skin includes a weakened tear seam region (16) for guiding the tearing of the air bag cover skin in response to air bag inflation. The tear seam region is weakened by photodegradation, i.e., selective exposure to ultraviolet light (20) which breaks polymer bonds within the polymeric material of the tear seam region. Photodegradation reduces the tensile strength and/or the percent elongation (measured at break) of the tear seam region (16) compared to the rest of the air bag cover skin (24).

摘要： A method of forming a motor vehicle instrument panel with a flexibly tethered air bag deployment door comprises the steps of molding an instrument panel with a first plastics material to a desired shape and with an integral air bag deployment door whose opening is defined by a tear seam formed by a groove molded in one side of the panel and with an integral mounting/hinge flange that extends from an inner side of the door, and forming a bonded layer of second plastics material on one side of the flange and the inner side of a potentially frangible portion of the door. The second plastics material has the physical characteristic of remaining ductile to a substantial degree at low temperatures substantial below the temperature at which the first plastics material becomes brittle and as a result the bonded layer forms a tether that connects the frangible door portion to the mounting/hinge flange in a flexible manner when this door portion breaks away from the flange because of embrittlement of the first plastics material at the low temperatures on tearing of the tear seam and opening movement of the door by an inflating air bag pressing against the inner side of the frangible door portion.

摘要： A method is provided for making a lightweight composite panel in which an outer skin is developed by spraying a heat curable reactive urethane formulation onto a contoured heated surface of a mold cavity of a press mold and maintained thereon in a semi-cured state. A substrate-forming foam layer impregnated with a hardening compound is positioned against a second foam layer and the layers in turn laid over the semi-cured urethane skin. The foam layers are urged together within the mold under heat and pressure at a temperature sufficient to accelerate activating of the hardening compound to render the substrate-forming foam layer relatively stiff, hard and self-supporting and less compressible than that of the second foam layer, and to bond the foam layers to one another at their interface, while forcing the semi-cured skin material into interstices of the second foam layer and thereafter curing the skin producing a bond between the skin and the second foam layer.
