    • 857,394. Outboard propeller drives. RATBY ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Sept. 4, 1959 [Sept. 25, 1958], No. 30674/58. Class 114. A stern drive for a boat comprises a connected pair of drive units each having an underwater casing 1 which, besides housing a vertical powertransmitting shaft 3 and carrying a bearing housing 4 for a horizontal propeller shaft 5, is combined and rigid with a steering component 7 mounted to turn about the axis of the powertransmitting shaft in order to effect steering, the two underwater casings 1 depending from, and the steering components 7 being mounted for turning in either direction within, a common drive casing 10 adapted to be supported from or mounted on the transom 26 of the boat and formed to accommodate means whereby the two vertical power-transmitting shafts 3 are rotationally driven in opposite directions for the purpose of counter acting the torque reaction on the steering. The drive shaft 28 has a bevel gear 41 meshing with two oppositely driven bevel gears 42, 42 1 rotating idly on a cross-shaft 43, the gears 42, 42 1 having dogs engageable by a clutch component 50 on the cross shaft 43 and manually shiftable to engage either the gear 42 or 42 1 to drive the cross shaft 43 in one direction or the other, and thence via gears 45, 46 and shafts 3, the propellers 21 in one direction for ahead drive and the other for reverse drive, the two shafts 3 being driven in directions opposite to each other in each case. The components 7 are simultaneously turned for steering by chains and sprockets 76, 75, 74, 73 actuated by a crown wheel 71 driven by a pinion 70 rotated by a sprocket 56 on a sleeve 55-29 rotated by a helm controlled shaft (not shown). The drive casing 10 is mounted on a swivel plate 27 attached to the transom 26 via a base plate 23 in such a manner that the entire stern drive can be rotated in athwartship direction so that the propellers may be swung laterally into any desired or predetermined positions. The casing 10 is suspended from the swivel plate 27 by a pivot pin 37 and shearable pin 40 so that if an obstacle is encountered the entire stern drive will swing in an astern and upward direction. As a safety device when the propeller is fouled, each propeller 21 is connected to its shaft 5 by a shearable key 22. Each casing 1 is provided with an anti-camlation plate 79.

[Class 114] In a twin unit combined propeller and steering mechanism, the propellers are carried at the lower ends of vertical housings and are driven by vertical shafts rotating in opposite directions. The propeller mechanisms 2, 3, Fig. 2, mounted on the deck of a vessel 1 are supplied each with a power generator in a housing 4. The propellers 5, 6 are each driven through gearing within a housing 8 by a vertical shaft 13 which extends through a lower housing 7 rotatable about its vertical axis to act as a rudder. In each unit the steering mechanism comprises a steering wheel 19, movement of which is transmitted through a shaft 20, chain and sprocket 21 and shaft 22 within housing 4 to the housing 7. The steering mechanism may be operated simultaneously from either steering wheel 19 through an inter-connecting shaft 34. When the power generator is an internal-combustion engine, simultaneous throttle control is arranged by an interconnecting hydraulic device 40, Fig. 8, in conjunction with a control lever 35 and its connecting links 36, 37, 38 to the throttle lever 39. Reversing levers 43 also are operable from either unit through endless cable 48, links 46 and actuating levers 47. In a modification, the two propellers are driven by a single power generator.
