    • A crystallization apparatus with a closed cylindrical tank has radial dividing walls in the lower tank portion to define therebetween a plurality of compartments ranging from a first compartment upstream to an output compartment downstream. All the walls, except the one between the output compartment and the first compartment upstream thereof, have ports permitting communication between the compartments for continuous flow therethrough of a solution whose solute is to be crystallized by evaporation. A feeding means for feeding an undersaturated solution of the solute into successive compartments is arranged in the upper portion of the tank for rotation about the vertical tank axis to sweep over the successive compartments, and shutters are provided for controlling the amount of the undersaturated solution fed to each of the compartments.

    • A dummy bar for use in a continuous casting operation is comprised of a series of parts which are linked together to pivot about parallel axes. Each joint between adjacent parts includes an end of one of the parts and a pivoting axle mounting the other adjacent part pivotally on the one part. A peg or pin is affixed to either the end of the one part or the pivoting axle and is received in a closed seat of either the pivoting axle or the end of the one part with sufficient play to permit a limited angular movement between the parts transversely of the pivoting axis.

    • A crystallization apparatus with a horizontal tank subdivided into a plurality of intercommunicating compartments has a plurality of walls parallel to the longitudinal axis of the tank arranged in each compartment to form therein two cells laterally adjacent the tank walls and at least one central cell. The neighboring cells in each compartment also communicate with each other, as does each cell laterally adjacent the tank walls with a like cell upstream or downstream, the ports in the dividing walls being so arranged that the product in the tank circulates therethrough in a sinuous path. Radiators are positioned in the lower part of the tank and pass through all compartments, the radiators being divided into several sections each positioned in one of the cells and forming in each cell a return passage for the product under the radiators.

    • The imperforate conical basket of a centrifugal separator carries a conical, mainly imperforate skirt which depends from the upper basket rim into the liquid receptacle bounded by the basket and by a stationary partition in the separator casing. The liquid flowing upwardly between the inner basket wall and a screen enters recesses at the top of the basket at least partly bounded by the skirt and is led to the inner skirt face. It is discharged centrifugally from the free lower edge of the skirt against a conical baffle attached to the partition and downwardly bounding an isolating chamber radially confined between the outer skirt face and the partition. Contamination of the discharged liquid with simultaneously discharged solids is prevented, air cannot carry the discharged liquid into the separated solids nor vice versa.
