    • An improved “twist-lok” binder ring metal 10 includes binder rings (12-16) comprised of pairs of binder ring halves having an end attached to leaves (18, 20). Each leaf has swedges (18a, 18b, 20a, 20b) are spaced along the length of the metal. A cover (22) fitting over the leaves has spaced openings (24) through which ring halves extend. The cover and leaves only have a point contact with each other, and the leaves extend away from the cover at a relatively shallow angle.The binder is opened by someone exerting finger pressure on one of the rings and twisting the ring halves apart. Because of the shallow angle of the leaves with respect to each other, the leaves do not readily rotate to a ring open position if the binder is dropped or bumped. The result is a ring metal readily opened by use of finger pressure on a binder ring, but which will not open if the binder is bumped or dropped.

    • A wrap-around notebook or binder includes a ring assembly with a shield and a pair of frames forming a bistable construction, and a hinge plate pivotally coupled to the shield with the outer surface of the hinge plate aligned with the outer extent of the shield/frame assembly when the hinge plate is parallel to the plane of the shield. The exposed frame member may be convex, recessed to receive rivet heads, and may be plated. The hinge plate(s) may have curls which interfit with alternate curls from the shield to provide a hinge. The ring assembly may be mounted in the notebook or binder so that the shield side of the ring assembly faces the front cover of the binder. The pivot line between the shield and the hinge plate may be spaced from the shield by a clearance distance. The notebook or binder lies flat on an underlying surface with either the front cover of the rear cover folded under the assembly.

    • A binder (12) for storing sheets (S) of paper having punched holes (H). First and second end leafs (16, 18) form outer covers of the binder. A center plate (20) is positioned intermediate the end leafs which are flexibly attached (at 16f, 18f) to the center plate to enclose sheets of paper between the end leafs. Binder rings (24, 26, 28) carrier on the center plate hold the sheets and are movable from a closed to an open position. Sheets are inserted into the binder by inserting the holes over an exposed end (24e, 26e, 28e) of the rings when the rings are opened. Locking mechanism (30) locks the rings closed. A mechanism (58) moves the rings from their closed to their open position. One end (24d, 26d, 28d) of the rings attach to a rotatable plate (60). The locking mechanism is located on one side of the center plate adjacent one of the end leafs, and the rotatable plate is located on the opposite side thereof adjacent the other end leaf. The plate pivotally moves in one direction with respect to the locking mechanism to open the rings and in the opposite direction to close them. Substantial quantities of paper are stored in the binder without the rings inadvertently opening became of the quantity of paper stored.
