    • A tab for attachment to a product such as a tea bag comprises a paper envelope (30) which is separable into two portions (40a, 40b) by tearing along a line of perforation (7). The envelope accommodates a length of thread (14) which adheres lightly to the facing surfaces of the envelope and is attached more firmly to the strip on respective sides of the line of perforation (7). One (40b) of the portions is heat sealed to the tea bag so that when the portions are pulled apart the line of perforation (7) tears and the thread (14) is unravelled from within the opened envelope but the ends of the thread remain attached to the now separated portions. An apparatus and method are disclosed for continuously producing tabs from a length of carrier strip and for applying them to products such as tea bags.

    • A fluid flow control device for electro-rheological (ER) fluids has an inlet port (11), an outlet port (12) and a flow path for ER fluid extending between the inlet and outlet ports (11 and 12). A first flow restrictor is disposed in the flow path and includes a resilient diaphragm (24) which is acted upon by pressure in the flow path and which is movable towards and away from a central region (28a) of a boss (18) having through passage (20) therein. A second flow restrictor is disposed in the flow path upstream of the first flow restrictor and includes electrodes formed by sleeve (10a), boss (18) and annular electrode plate (42). An electric field is applied to the ER fluid as it passes between the electrodes to enable control of the resistance to flow of the ER fluid therethrough and thereby to enable control of the pressure drop across the diaphragm (24).

    • A radar system adapted to be installed on a vehicle (1) is operable to detect objects in different fields of view of the system. The system has transceiver means (2, 3; 44, 46) for transmitting a radar signal and receiving the signal after the latter has been reflected from an object to be detected. A reflected signal is sampled by sampling means (12; 66) during a succession of sampling periods each of which is delayed with respect to a corresponding portion of the transmitted signal. The gating of the reflected signal effectively generates range shells, each of which corresponds to the time taken for a transmitted signal to reach an object at the shell, and to be reflected back to the system and is hence related to the delay between the transmission of the signal and the corresponding sampling period. The range shells define the field of view of the system, which can be changed by altering said delay. Such alterations are carried out under the control of control means which is connected to sensor means for detecting a property of the operation of the vehicle, determining a required positon of the field of view, and setting the field of view of the system accordingly. The range shell positions, and hence fields of view, can also be changed by selecting alternative transmitters and/or receivers of the transceiver means. There is also shown a motor road vehicle which has a radar system comprising a pair of transmitter antennas at two alternate corner regions of the vehicle and a pair of cooperating receiver antennas of the other two corner regions. Certain embodiments of the system also have the facility to generate range shells which are swept over an area around the vehicle or which track detected objects.
