    • Disclosed is a portable apparatus for batting practice which aids in the development and/or improvement of a batter's ability to strike a baseball/softball with a baseball/softball bat. The apparatus consists of ball-targets, affixed to a hub, that rotate about a horizontal axle. Suitably, the hub is defined by a strap and clamp assembly. The apparatus may be affixed to any vertical assembly, but will typically be affixed to a standard vertical assembly, commonly known as a batting tee. Once so affixed, the apparatus may be adjusted up or down along with the tee, to allow for batters of varying heights to use the apparatus. The batter strikes the target, with the selected implement, in this case a baseball/softball bat, causing the target to rotate around the horizontal axle, eventually returning a target once again to the upright and proper position, allowing for further training using said apparatus.

    • A tape course generator produces tape course definitions for use in programming a CNC composite tape lamination machine. The tape course generator includes a reference surface parameterizer that maps a contoured surface onto a parametric reference surface, and a reference plane instantiator that maps the reference surface onto a reference plane. The tape course generator also includes a tape boundary plotter that plots a tape boundary, and a boundary mapper that maps the tape boundary and a ply boundary into the reference plane. In addition, the tape course generator includes an intersection locator that identifies intersections of the ply boundary and the tape boundary, and a tape course delimiter that defines tape cuts and determines which points in the reference plane are within a tape course. Moreover, the tape course generator includes a tape course transformer that maps the defined tape course back onto the contoured surface.

    • A process for the rendering of an effluent stream from a food processing plant, in which the effluent has or is made to have an acidic pH and carries proteinaceous material. The effluent is contacted with an inorganic coagulant (clay) that together with the acidic pH effectively neutralizes ionic charges on the proteinaceous material to cause the proteinaceous material to precipitate out of solution. The effluent stream is contacted with a biologically derived polymeric flocculant to facilitate settling of the precipitated proteinaceous material as flocs. The inorganic coagulant is present in an amount by weight of at least 1.5 times or 2.5 times the amount by weight of polymeric flocculant. Flocs are removed from the effluent stream to thereby render the effluent stream. A biologically derived co-flocculant is added to the effluent stream after contact with the effluent stream by coagulant and flocculant. Insoluble salts of alkaline earth metals are added to the effluent stream after contact with the effluent stream by coagulant and flocculant. The process may be applied to unit operations within the food processing plant. Apparatus for floc treatment include a mixing and acidity settling tank, a conical settling vessel with baffled outlet, a floc seed supply for effluent entering the settling vessel, an effluent diffuser at the inlet to the settling vessel and an agitator set to delay agitation until floc settles in the settling vessel.

    • A token ring local area network includes workstations running both conventional data and multimedia applications. The latter, which generally requires a minimum throughput in order to be viable, can be split into two further categories; those which cannot tolerate excessive latency (end to end delay), typically interactive applications such as voice communications, and those which are less sensitive to latenoy, typically playback operations, the network recognises three priority levels: (1) for latency-sensitive multimedia applications, (2) for latency-insensitive multimedia applications, and (3) conventional applications. All multimedia applications prior to commencement of any communications over the LAN must request an allocation of throughput from a LAN segment resource manager (LSRM), which will only be awarded if there is currently sufficient available throughput on the LAN to support the attended communication. Furthermore, first priority level applications are also given a maximum token holding time, thereby ensuring rapid circulation of the token, and controlling latency.

    • A mobile communications system including one or more mobile communications devices and a mobile communications network, the mobile communications network including a radio network part and a core network part and being configured to communicate data packets to and/or from mobile communications devices. Data packets can be communicated to or received from the mobile communications devices using either a broadband packet network or a dedicated messaging network. The dedicated messaging network is arranged to communicate short data grams more efficiently than larger data communications. Therefore by selecting either the dedicated messaging network or the broadband network as a function of content of the data packet a more efficient use of available communications resources and hardware resources is realized.
