    • A disc cartridge for containing therein a disc-shaped medium which includes a generally flattened disc casing having a disc chamber defined therein for accommodating the disc-shaped medium and also having an access opening leading into the disc chamber, a lid structure supported by the disc casing at a position adjacent the access opening for movement between a closed position, in which the access opening is closed, and an opened position, and a lid lock interposed between the disc casing and the lid structure for locking the lid structure in the closed position. The lid lock includes a removable lock piece having first and second spaced functional parts. The first functional part has a breakable region through which the removable lock piece is connected with a portion of one of the disc casing and the lid structure, and the second functional part is engageable with a portion of the other of the disc casing and the lid structure to retain the lid structure in the closed position. The lid structure can be moved from the closed position towards the opened position only when and after the removable lock piece is broken off along the breakable region by application of an external force thereto.

    • A disc cartridge for freely rotatably accommodating a disc-shaped recording medium, which includes a cartridge casing having a disc chamber defined therein for freely rotatably accommodating the recording medium and also a generally U-shaped access opening defined in one of four sides of the cartridge casing, a lid assembly pivotally supported by the cartridge casing for pivotal movement about a pivot pin in a plane substantially parallel to a plane of the cartridge casing for selectively opening and closing the access opening, and a lid lock means provided between the cartridge casing and the lid assembly for locking the lid assembly in a closed position. The lid lock means includes at least one tubular boss having a through-hole defined therein, and an engagement piece accommodated within the through-hole and separably connected to the tubular boss, a part of the engagement piece protruding outwardly from one of opposite ends of the through-hole and engageable in a hole defined in one of top and bottom walls of the cartridge casing which is adjacent to said one of the opposite ends of the through-hole. That part of the engagement piece is engaged in the hole when the lid assembly is held in the closed position, but the engagement piece may be separated from the tubular boss when an external pushing force is applied thereto through the hole.

    • A disc cartridge for freely rotatably accommodating a disc-shaped recording medium has a slide shutter assembly for selectively opening and closing the access window through which a recording and/or reproducing head is accessible to the optical disc accommodated within the cartridge. The slide shutter assembly is of a generally U-shaped configuration including top and bottom shutter plates and a bridge plate connecting the top and bottom shutter plates. While the slide shutter assembly is slidably mounted on a front open portion of the cartridge casing, the bridge plate has an inner surface formed integrally with a plurality of catch pieces. At least one guide plate extends along the front open portion of the cartridge casing between side walls and has a slot defined therein so as to extend lengthwise of the guide plate. With the slide shutter assembly mounted on the front portion of the cartridge casing, the catch pieces are slidably engaged in said slot to avoid an accidental separation of the slide shutter assembly from the cartridge casing.

    • A magnetic recording medium, which includes a substrate and an amorphous magnetic layer, made of an amorphous magnetic material, for magnetic recording of data, is provided with an underlayer between the substrate and the amorphous magnetic layer, the underlayer being made of amorphous metal element, and having a mean thickness of 10 nm or less. Moreover, this allows the magnetic recording medium to have a simplified layer structure. Further, a magnetic recording apparatus magnetically records data onto a magnetic recording medium having the above arrangement, by heating a portion of the magnetic layer by radiating a light beam locally, and by applying a magnetic field on at least part of the portion of the magnetic layer on which the light beam is radiated. This provides a magnetic recording apparatus for high-density recording.
