    • Systems and methods for a fault protection are provided that can be implemented in a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) to limit the magnitude of a current that flows when an AC-to-chassis fault (ACF) occurs between an AC connection and the chassis of the HEV. An electric machine having a winding, an inverter sub-module (ISM) having a first switch and a second switch, and fault protection elements (FPEs), coupled to the ISM, are provided. The winding is coupled to the ISM coupled via the AC connection. The FPEs can include, for example, first and second inductances. To limit the magnitude of the current, the current can be passed along a first current path that includes the second inductance when the first switch is closed, and can be passed along a second current path that includes the first inductance when the second switch is closed.

    • A method for controlling a hybrid machine is disclosed. The hybrid machine may be equipped with a turbine engine (102), a generator (120) connected in series with the turbine engine (102), an electrical energy storage device (130), and a motor (140) drivingly connected to a power output component for the hybrid machine. A controller (250) may receive a power demand signal, determine a power level in the electrical energy storage device (130), determine available inertial energy stored at least in rotating components of the turbine engine (102) and the generator (120), and provide one or more control signals to selectively control powering the turbine engine (102) to full power, selectively turn off all fuel to the turbine engine (102), selectively store excess energy as electrical energy by directing excess electrical energy from the generator (120) to the electrical energy storage device (130), and selectively store excess energy as inertial energy.
