    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-treated steel plate for a battery container capable of suppressing elution of iron or nickel into a nonaqueous electrolyte when being used as a battery container for a battery using the nonaqueous electrolyte, and preventing effectively generation of pitting-corrosion or liquid leak, or decline in a battery characteristic.SOLUTION: A surface-treated steel plate for a battery container for forming a battery container for a battery using a nonaqueous electrolyte as an electrolyte, has an iron-nickel diffusion layer formed by performing thermal diffusion treatment after forming a nickel plating layer at least on a surface on the inner surface side of the battery container of the steel plate. In the surface-treated steel plate for the battery container, the ratio of Ni to Fe in the outermost layer of the iron-nickel diffusion layer is 7.5 or less in terms of the molar ratio of Ni/Fe, and the thickness of the iron-nickel diffusion layer is 0.6 μm or more.
