    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a silicon carbide ceramic fiber free from a carbon-rich layer present on the fiber surface and stable even in a high-temperature/oxidizing atmosphere and to provide a method for producing the same and a ceramic-base composite material reinforced with the silicon carbide ceramic fiber and having excellent oxidation resistance at high temperatures.
      SOLUTION: The crystalline silicon carbide fiber has 2.7-3.2 g/cm
      3 density and is composed of 50-70 wt.% of Si, 28-45 wt.% of C, 0.06-3.8 wt.% of Al and 0.06-0.5 wt.% of B and a sintered structure of SiC. The atomic ratio of the C in the fiber surface is 50-75% and the atomic ratio of the O is 0-25%. The atomic ratios of the C and O have a tendency to reduce to the interior of the fiber. Both the depth from the fiber surface where the atomic ratio of the C is ≤55% and the depth from the fiber surface where the atomic ratio of the O is ≤5% are 0-5 nm (expressed in terms of SiO
      2 ).
