    • A protective cover for use on a device having a switch. The protective cover prevents inadvertent or accidental operation of the switch, while allowing deliberate or intentional operation of the switch with the protective cover in place. The protective cover includes a plate and a pair of access apertures defined by the plate. One of the pair of access apertures is positioned to enable operation of the switch from a first position to a second position, and the other of the pair of access apertures is positioned to enable operation of the switch from the second position to the first position. The area of each access aperture is of suitable size to prevent inadvertent operation of the switch. The plate is attached to the device using attaching means that allows the plate to be attached to the device in only one orientation.

    • A guard for preventing movement of a handle by an operator from a locked position to a second position. The handle is coupled to an operating mechanism which controls a distribution device. The handle extends outwardly from the surface of the distribution device. The guard includes a cover which is configured to substantially enclose the handle while in the locked position. The cover is supported about the handle by abutting the surface of the distribution device. The cover is also configured to allow the handle to move from the locked position to the second position wherein the cover prevents an operator, but not the operating mechanism, from moving the handle from the locked position to the second position and the handle positively indicates the state of the operating mechanism between the positions. The guard also locks the cover to the distribution device. The present invention also a method of positively indicating the state of an operating mechanism controlling a distribution device while simultaneously preventing movement of a handle coupled to the operating mechanism by an operator from a locked position to a second position. The handle is coupled to an operating mechanism which controls a distribution device. The handle extends outwardly from the surface of the distribution device.

    • A motor operator unit for an electrical switch is pivotally mounted on a bracket to swing between a closed, operative position in which an actuator in the motor operator unit engages the switch handle for electrical operation of the switch handle and an open position in which the switch handle is freely accessible for direct manual operation. The compliant actuator which is translated by a motor driven threaded shaft overtravels at each end of its reciprocal path after actuation of the switch handle to toggle a single power switch which determines both direction and shutoff of motor operation. A lockout plate mechanically prevents electrical and manual operation of the switch handle and carries an interlock switch which only enables motor operation when the motor operator unit is in the operative position and not locked out. The actuator is configured to prevent full rotation of the motor operator to the operative position, if the position of the actuator, which is virtually identified by indicators, does not correspond to handle position.

    • A safety lockout apparatus for an electrical circuit includes an electrical switch, a key, a lock and a blocking mechanism. The electrical switch is movable between an ON position at which the electrical circuit is energized and an OFF position at which the electrical circuit is deactivated. The lock is adapted to receive the key and is rotatable among a plurality of positions by the key. The key is only insertable and removable when the lock is at a preselected position. The lock is maintained in the preselected position when the key is removed from the lock. The blocking mechanism physically maintains the switch in its OFF position when the key is removed from the lock.The blocking mechanism preferably includes a member driven by the lock between a first position at which the electrical switch is movable between its ON and OFF positions and a second position at which the member physically maintains the electrical switch in its OFF position. Advantageously, the driven member's second position corresponds to the preselected position at which the key can be removed from and inserted into the lock.
