    • A method for detecting predetermined fault conditions associated with the supply of AC electrical power to a consumer, the supply having an active conductor and a neutral conductor with the neutral conductor being connected to earth. The method comprises providing a first current detector associated with the active conductor, providing a second current detector associated with the neutral conductor; providing a voltage detector to detect voltage between the active conductor and the neutral conductor, and checking a current ratio of neutral current to active current whereby the current ratio is indicative of a predetermined fault condition. Also disclosed is a method of checking the condition of supply line active and neutral conductors in a consumer's supplied premises including determining the impedance of the active conductor and the impedance of the neutral conductor to indicate the condition of each of the active and neutral conductors.

    • A leakage current detection interrupter (LCDI) having open neutral detection. In one embodiment, the LCDI is formed in a plug and includes a circuit interrupter means for breaking a conductive path between line side phase and neutral conductors and load side phase and neutral conductors. A tripping means is coupled to operate the circuit interrupter means to break the conductive path upon the detection of the opening of the line side neutral conductor referred to as open neutral condition. The tripping means, which uses the neutral path as a return path if leakage current is detected, will, with this invention, use a line side ground conductor as a return path if the neutral path is broken anywhere between a service panel entrance and the plug. In response to the opening of the line side neutral conductor or leakage current, the LCDI interrupts the flow of current to a load such as a window air conditioner.

    • A detector for monitoring the integrity of a ground connection to an electrical appliance having live and neutral terminals for feeding current to the appliance from respective live and neutral feeders of an electrical supply having a ground point for connecting to the ground terminal of the appliance. The detector comprises a differential comparator circuit for comparing a voltage at the neutral connection with a voltage at the ground terminal of the appliance and producing a fault signal if a difference therebetween exceeds a predetermined threshold. A normally closed switching device is connected in at least one of the live and neutral connections so as to be opened by a relay operatively coupled to the detector and responsive to the fault signal produced thereby.

    • A loss of neutral detector is disclosed. The detector includes a closed loop circuit which has a charge storage device, an output device and a switch in a normally-open position. The switch is controlled by a switch control circuit operatively connected to a loss of neutral detection circuit. The loss of neutral detection circuit detects an electro-magnetic field generated around the neutral lead on increase of the neutral potential via a pull-up resistor on loss of neutral. On detection of loss of neutral, the switch is closed so that the charge storage device energizes the closed loop circuit to activate the output device.
