    • A film image retrieval and scanning apparatus having split first and second optical paths with each optical path being precisely aligned with the other, and each path containing coupled zoom optics. The first path projects a film image onto a first scanner array in the first path to provide a real time display of the image on a TV monitor. The second optical path projects an image onto a second scanner array, which may have a higher resolution than the first array to provide an analog signal that is converted to a digital signal of the image that may be stored, or transmitted on a network, or both. The first scanner provides a real time image and serves as a viewfinder that can be used to locate the proper position of an image; thus ensuring that the image will be aligned with the second array so that it can be scanned by the second scanner array when desired.

    • Mode selection switches (76, 96, 98) selectively interconnect a sensor line shift timing generator (76) with one of three signal sources - (1) a conventional raster scan timing signal from a raster scan sync generator (70), (2) variable speed external timing signals from a tachometer (32), and (3) fixed speed timing signals developed from the horizontal timing signals of the raster scan sync generator. In a time delay and integration mode, the sensor line shift timing generator causes the CCD arrays of an image section (22) and storage section (24) to shift pixel values down the CCD arrays at a rate commensurate with the external timing signal. As a spot of light emanating from a portion of an object moving through an examination region moves along the CCD array, a corresponding pixel charge is shifted through the CCD array at the same speed such that the same pixel charge integrates light from the same spot as it moves the entire length of the CCD array. An output register timing generator (80) generates timing signals for output registers (26 ) such that an output signal is produced that is compatible with EIA-170 television signal standard. In the conventional raster scan mode, the camera works as a conventional video camera. When connected to the variable frequency timing signal, the video picture scrolls down the TV monitor clocked by the tachometer in proportion to the speed of the conveyor. In the calibration mode, the image scrolls down the video screen at a fixed rate.

    • An apparatus and process for providing an automated edit procedure between film and video formats is provided wherein a video edit becomes within one video field the exact replica of a film edit. Film frames (1/24th of a second) are read by video scans (1st and 2nd fields in 1/30th of a second) in a 3:2 pull down wherein successive movie frame scans are provided with four classes of video scans. These classes of video scans include (Class A) odd/even scans; (Class B) odd/even/odd scans; (Class C) even/odd/scans; and, finally (Class D) even/odd/even scans. All edits are limited to film frame edits. Each time a film frame edit is converted to a video edit decision, the system looks at the edit out frame type and/or the edit in frame type and the cumulative current overall time differential between the video run time and the film run time for the edit. Frames are added or subtracted to keep the total error within + or - one field and a new cumulative error calculated for the next sequential edit. All edits are made between respective odd to even. The system is preferably used by taking a film edit decision list, recording the desired edit decisions on a film format with respect to a video master, and thereafter reprocessing those decisions in accordance with the protocol set forth above. There results a side-by-side video and film cut which are indistinguishable in temporal detectable sound and motion characteristics.

    • An image transducing apparatus is disclosed. An object to be imaged is located in a fixed object plane. A lens focuses the image of the object upon an imaging plane. A photoelectric transducing array having a plurality of congruent, discrete, spaced-apart transducing elements arranged in an array is located in the imaging plane and provides an electrical signal representative of the light intensity thereon. The photoelectric array is movable on a microstage which is movable in two axis. The microstage is mechanically displaced in a direction parallel to the imaging plane from a first position to a plurality of subsequent positions. The distance from each position to a subsequent position is less than the dimension of a transducing element along the direction of the displacement. The photoelectric array is moved and is stopped at each of the displaced positions where an electrical signal from the photoelectric array is taken. The signals from each of the positions traversed by the photoelectric array is combined to form an electrical representation of the image of the object.
