    • An image to be printed on a surface of a substrate that forms, or will be used in, a personalized security document is generated. The image to be printed is then sliced, divided, separated, etc. into a plurality of separate image portions. Each of the separate image portions is then printed onto the substrate. Together, the separate printed image portions form the desired image on the substrate. Each image portion contains only a portion of any confidential or personal information. Each separate image portion is printed using separate sections of a single print ribbon. Since each image portion is printed using a different section of the print ribbon, each ribbon section contains only a portion of any confidential or personal information. This makes it difficult for someone to obtain the confidential or personal information from just a brief or casual glance at the used print ribbon.

    • Generally, in accordance with one embodiment, a thermal printer comprises a thermal head configured to press a transfer ribbon conveyed along with a sheet towards the sheet and endows the transfer ribbon with heat to transfer the ink of the transfer ribbon to the sheet; a head moving mechanism configured to lift the thermal head to an unprintable position separating from the sheet side and lower the thermal head to a printable position where the transfer ribbon is pressed to the sheet; and a controller configured to acquire a set value of printing speed, carry out printing process while conveying the sheet at the printing speed in a printing area, change the sheet conveyance speed to a speed lower than the set value in a non-print area, and lift and lower the thermal head while conveying the sheet at the lower speed.

    • A thermal printer and control method for a thermal printer is provided. The thermal printer includes a print head and a paper feed mechanism for conveying a print medium past the print head at a controlled print speed based on predetermined print speed control factors. Operations include determining the print speed of the print medium based on the print speed control factors; determining a change, if any, in the print speed; determining if the change in print speed exceeds a predetermined threshold value; and controlling the paper feed mechanism to limit the change in the print speed if the change in the print speed is determined to have exceeded the threshold value. The change of the print speed is decreased for at least one predetermined time when the change in the print speed is determined to have exceeded the threshold value.
