    • A fixed contact element and a movable contact element can be brought into and out of engagement with one another within a switching chamber. The switching chamber flow communicates, on the one hand, by means of a blast nozzle, closed by the movable contact element in the cut-on position of the gas-blast switch, with an expansion chamber and, on the other hand, flow communicates by means of a check or a non-return valve which opens in the direction of the switching chamber, with the pressure side of a pump cylinder arranged in the expansion chamber. Operatively associated with the pump cylinder is a movable pump piston which pressurizes the pump cylinder during a cut-off stroke with a time-delay. To reduce the constructional expenditure and to increase the operational reliability the pump piston is rigidly connected with the movable contact element, whereas the length of the pump cylinder is less than the switching stroke of the movable contact element, so that the pump piston is located externally of the pump cylinder at the region of the cut-on position of the gas-blast switch.

    • A movable contact element is coupled by a step-up lever drive with a drive rod. The movable contact element is surrounded by a blast nozzle which moves along with the movable contact element. The blast nozzle is connected to a pump cylinder containing an extinguishing gas. The pump cylinder is guided to be vertically displaceable upon a pump piston and this pump piston is hingedly connected with one end of a first element of a toggle lever which in the cut-on position is in its bent position or mode, the second element of the toggle lever being hingedly connected at a stationary location. The toggle joint of the toggle lever is likewise coupled with the drive rod, so that during a cut-off stroke the toggle lever is extended and then again bent. So that at the start of a cut-off stroke there is initially accelerated the movable contact element and along therewith the blast nozzle as well as the pump cylinder and only thereafter is there compressed the extinguishing gas within the pump cylinder, the lever drive possesses a first coupling element or link which is hingedly connected at one end at the toggle joint and at its other end at the movable contact element as well as a second coupling element or link which is hingedly connected at one end between the ends of the first coupling element at such first coupling element and at its other end at the drive rod, so that at the start of the cut-off stroke the bent position of the toggle lever initially is intensified.

    • A single barrel puffer circuit interrupter is taught. The single barrel accomplishes the multiple purposes of electrical insulation between terminals, basic support and puffer gas containment. The circuit interrupter has a movable nozzle-piston arrangement fixedly attached to a movable cylindrical hollow arcing contact. The nozzle slidably engages a second cylindrical, hollow arcing contact and is disposed in slidable but sealed relationship therewith at all times, thus providing a shield between the arcing contact and the barrel of the circuit interrupter. In addition, one of the arcing contacts overlaps the other in telescoping relationship when the contacts are closed. This provides a lost motion feature for the puffer. The lost motion feature allows the puffer gas to be compressed for a short period of time by the piston during a contact opening operation in a completely enclosed region before the gas is provided to the region of an electric arc between the opening contacts.

    • A puffer-type gas-blast circuit-breaker comprises an interrupting unit mounted in a housing filled with an insulating gas of high dielectric strength such as sulfur hexafluoride. The interrupting unit includes a main circuit having a pair of stationary and movable main contacts, and an arcing circuit having a pair of stationary and movable arcing contacts. An operating mechanism comprises a control rod coupled to the movable contacts so as to open the main contacts before the separation of the arcing contacts. A pair of input and output terminals extend out of the housing, and a shunt conductor is arranged in the arcing circuit between operating rod and the lower terminal. The longitudinally extending main and arcing circuits are connected in parallel to the terminals and form two independent current paths which are cross-wise spaced inside the housing. A partition wall divides the inner space of the housing into two superposed compartments, one of them including the main contacts, and the other the arcing zone.

They are arranged with axial play in annular grooves which are formed in the piston in flow paths for the quenching gas. Between the sealing rings is arranged at least one spacer element. The rings are supported in a way so that they are movable transversely to the main axis of the piston.

    • A sulfur hexafluoride interrupter structure uses sulfur hexafluoride at supercritical pressure and includes two spaced pistons of different diameters disposed on opposite sides of the contact arcing region. The pistons are connected to a source of biasing force such as a spring and assume a static position dependent on the opposing force of the spring and of the differential pressure on the pistons. During contact interruption the initial arc between the separating contacts produces a high pressure in the contact space which is transmitted to the differential pistons and causes the pistons to move quickly in order to move fluid through the separating contacts. The piston biasing spring is also charged as the movable contact moves toward a disengaged position. High pressure surges created due to the arc energy are thus absorbed during the opening operation and a considerable part of the operating force needed to open the contacts and to move fluid is derived from the arc energy.

    • An improved circuit interrupting device extinguishes an arc by directing a dielectric fluid at the arc as it is elongated. Elongation is effected by relative movement apart of a pair of contacts between which the arc is established. A reservoir contains a piston which defines a first volume and a second volume. The fluid is held under pressure in the second volume. The reservoir directs the fluid in the second volume at the arc from a port normally closed by a diaphragm. One contact is normally mechanically attached to the diaphragm and is adjacent the other contact which is on the reservoir. Sudden expansion of the first volume, such as by the ignition of a power cartridge, forcefully moves the reservoir relative to the piston and away from the one contact. The seal is torn or cut open to permit the pressurized fluid to flow from the port simultaneously with the piston forcing the fluid from the second volume and the movement apart of the contacts.
