    • An optical pressure sensor assembly integrated with a spark plug (16) and spark plug boot (12). The pressure sensor comprises an optical fiber (34) with a pressure diaphragm (36) at the tip to sense pressure and pressure changes within the combustion chamber (32) of a spark ignition engine. A channel (30) is provided in the spark plug to hold the sensor. The diaphragm (36) of the sensor is located closer to the spark electrode than to the electric conductor which is encased by the boot (12). The optical fiber (34) is contained within a shaft that is routed through the boot (12) and into the channel (30). The optical fiber (34) is operatively and electrically connected to the vehicle's engine controller. The opto-electric connection to the vehicle's engine controller is made adjacent a coil (72) in the boot (12) or removed from the coil (72). The fiber (34) is surrounded by a nonmetallic shaft (22) outside the engine. Inside the spark plug (16), the shaft is metallic.

    • A spark plug derives an extended lifetime because a large plurality of sharp edges are provided on the center electrode, the ground electrode, or both to enhance spark propagation. In a first embodiment, the ground electrode has a conventional cantilever shape, but the center electrode extends into coplanar relation to a distal surface of the electrode so that sparks propagate from the cylindrical side walls of the center electrode. In variations of the first embodiment, the number of cantilevered ground electrodes is increased, with the ground electrodes being circumferentially and equidistantly spaced about the center electrode. In another embodiment, the ground electrode has an annular configuration and includes a cylindrical annular wall spaced radially outwardly of the cylindrical sidewall of the center electrode, in concentric relation to the center electrode. Variations of the second embodiment include screw threads, knurls, and various projections formed on the ground electrode, the center electrode, or both.

The pressure-sensitive ignition plug has a pressure-sensitive unit having an annular form and mounted in an annular space formed between an insulator assembly embracing a central electrode and a metallic plug body which supports the insulator assembly. The pressure sensing unit has an upwardly projected signal terminal through which an amplifier unit for amplifying the signal from the pressure sensing unit is detachably connected to the latter. The amplifier unit is embedded in a rubber sheath covering the upper half part of the ignition plug or, alternatively, formed in an annular shape and accomodated by a metallic case having a central through bore, the metallic case being adapted to make a snap fit to a hexagonal portion of the plug body from the upper side of the latter.

    • A method for forming a gasketless seat between an insulator and a shell in a spark plug. A downwardly facing shoulder is formed on the insulator to define an angle within a range between 20* and 45* to a plane perpendicular to the insulator axis. An upwardly facing shoulder is formed within a reduced opening in the shell to define an angle within a range between 0* to a plane perpendicular to the shell axis and 5* less than the insulator shoulder angle. The insulator is then inserted into the shell opening until the downwardly facing shoulder on the insulator abuts the upwardly facing shoulder within the shell opening. In completing assembly of the spark plug, the insulator is forced into the shell to deform the shell shoulder by cold working it against the insulator shoulder, thereby forming a thermally conducting seat between the shell and the insulator.
