    • Techniques and structures for tuning integrated, distributed voltage-controlled oscillators (DVCO's) across a wide microwave frequency range are disclosed. One type of DVCO implements a tuning circuit that includes a pair of interconnected amplifying transistors and a current source connected to the transistors, such that a differential voltage input to the circuit adjusts the current to each transistor and effectively adjusts the “electrical length” of one of the transmission lines on which the output frequency is oscillating. This, in turn, adjusts the time delay and thus frequency of the signal propagating on the lines across a wide frequency band. This technique is called “current-steering.” In a preferred embodiment, the tuning circuit is balanced with a complementary tuning circuit to effectively adjust the electrical length of the second transmission line in the oscillator. In another technique that provides for more coarse, but wider range, broadband frequency tuning, the time delay, and thus, frequency, of the DVCO is adjustable by varying the capacitive loading on the transmission lines, by introducing a coupling capacitor between the transmission lines and tuning the intrinsic capacitances of the gain transistors with a dc bias input.

    • A phase synthesis network having self healing capability. The phase synthesis network includes two phase rotators that receive I and Q input LO signals, that receive a digital control signal, and that can adjust a phase and a gain in response to the digital control signal. An output of each of the phase rotators provides a respective output signal to a switch. The switch provides a selected one of the respective output signals for mixing with a predetermined one of the respective output signals. Two mixers mix signals from the phase rotators with an RF signal. Two analog-to-digital converters provide a respective digital signal representative of the output of the mixers. A baseband digital processor generates digital control signals that are provided to the phase rotators. The circuit has an output terminal configured to provide an output signal representative of the RF signal.

    • The present invention discloses a distributed power amplifier topology and device that efficiently and economically enhances the power output of an RF signal to be amplified. The power amplifier comprises a plurality of push-pull amplifiers interconnected in a novel circular geometry that preferably function as a first winding of an active transformer having signal inputs of adjacent amplification devices driven with an input signal of equal magnitude and opposite phase. The topology also discloses the use of a secondary winding that matches the geometry of primary winding and variations thereof that serve to efficiently combine the power of the individual power amplifiers. The novel architecture enables the design of low-cost, fully-integrated, high-power amplifiers in the RF, microwave, and millimeter-wave frequencies.

Each of the plurality of coils is electromagnetically coupled together to form an inductor between a first inductor terminal and a second inductor terminal. At least one of the plurality of coils is disposed in a layer on an integrated structure and at least another of one of the plurality of coils disposed in a layer of the integrated structure. One of the plurality of coils is spaced with respect to another of the plurality of coils to cause a substantially uniform magnetic field strength across a surface of the integrated inductor.
