    • A coding method of a binary Markov information source comprises the steps of providing a range on a number line from 0 to 1 which corresponds to an output symbol sequence from the information source, and performing data compression by binary expressing the position information on the number line corresponding to the output symbol sequence. The present method further includes the steps of providing a normalization number line to keep a desired calculation accuracy by expanding a range of the number line which includes a mapping range, by means of a multiple of a power of 2, when the mapping range becomes below 0.5 of the range of the number line; allocating a predetermined mapping range on the normalization number line for less probable symbols LPS proportional to its normal occurrence probability; allocating the remaining mapping range on the normalization number line for more probable symbols MPS; and reassigning the predetermined mapping range to the remaining mapping range the half of a portion where the allocated remaining range is less than 0.5, when the allocated remaining range becomes below 0.5.

    • The present invention discloses a method and apparatus for hierarchical coding of image data using a typical prediction TP if a 2.times.2 array of pixels can be reduced to coded pixel. The present invention uses a TP flag, TP discrimination and a two line delay. Accordingly, the hierarchical coding can be realized by a small amount of hardware. According to deterministic prediction DP, if there is a decision that the image data may be reduced then the value of the pixel can be predicted from a reduced pixel (low resolution data) and surrounding pixels (high resolution data) which are extracted in advance. If the pixel to be coded is one that can be uniquely determined this pixel is excluded form coding.

    • The present invention provides a method and apparatus for compressing images of financial instruments and other documents. The method of the present invention includes the steps of scanning a plurality of documents to obtain an electronic image of each document; identifying a static portion in the electronic image of each of the documents, containing information which remains substantially unchanged for the plurality of documents, by locating and reading a document identifier in the image; storing the document identifier in a database; identifying a dynamic portion, typically containing distinct information for each of the documents, in each of the electronic images; isolating the dynamic portion from the static portion within the image to obtain a dynamic image containing only the dynamic portion; and storing the dynamic image in the database. The present invention provides efficient techniques for identifying and isolating dynamic information in a document, such as handwritten text on a check.

    • A two-dimensional coding apparatus for two-dimensionally coding binary image data prepared by way of a FIFO memory, which reduces a time for which a host computer participates to enhance the speed of decoding processing. A two-dimensional coding circuit outputs a signal representing whether data to be read out from a memory are reference line data or coding line data, and in response to the signal and a signal read out from the memory, a circuit consisting of an invertor and a pair of AND gates outputs a read-out signal for a reference line FIFO memory and another read-out signal for a coding line FIFO memory. Consequently, the host computer need not control the memory address outputted from the two-dimensional coding circuit to fetch binary image data from the image data FIFO memory, and the FIFO memories can be used without special hardware means for the memory address control.
