    • An alkaline battery includes: a battery can (2) encasing a positive mixture (4), a separator (5) and a gel-like negative electrode (6); and a sealing assembly for fitting to an opening of the battery can (11), the sealing assembly including: a gasket (7) including an inner cylindrical portion (7a), an outer cylindrical portion (7b) that engages with an inner periphery of the opening of the battery can, a linking portion (7c) that connects the inner cylindrical portion to the outer cylindrical portion, and a thin portion (8) that is formed between the linking portion and the inner cylindrical portion, with a negative electrode collector (9) being placed through the inner cylindrical portion and through the gel-like negative electrode; and a negative electrode terminal plate (10) that is welded to a head (9a) of the negative electrode collector and has its outer edge engaging with the inside of the outer cylindrical portion of the gasket, wherein the opening of the battery can is sealed by the edge of the opening of the battery can as the edge is bent inward and axially crimped while the seal assembly is being supported by a groove (12) formed at the opening of the battery can to engage with the opening. In this alkaline battery, the linking portion of the gasket includes an annular disc (7f) that is uniform in thickness and has a two-step profile with a bent portion (7g) formed at its middle portion as viewed along the radial direction. The alkaline battery has a reduced axial dimension of the sealing portion and thus achieves improved discharge performance while retaining its safety and leakage-proof performance.

    • An end cap assembly for an electrochemical cell such as an alkaline cell is disclosed. The end cap assembly is inserted into the open end of a cylindrical housing for the cell in order to seal the housing. The end cap assembly comprises a metal support disk and underlying insulating sealing disk. The insulating sealing disk has a central hub and radial arm extending therefrom. The insulating sealing disk has a thinned portion within the radial arm. The thinned portion forms a rupturable membrane, which can rupture when gas pressure within the cell rises. The rupturable membrane is inclined so that it has a high point which is closer to the cell's central longitudinal axis than the membrane's low point, when the cell is viewed with the end cap assembly on top. The inclined membrane provides more space between the insulating disk and the metal support disk into which the membrane can rupture.

    • A portable electronic apparatus comprises a frame having a recessed portion for receiving a battery. The recessed portion has a bottom portion that has an upper surface on which the battery seats. A circuit board is disposed beneath the frame and has two locking holes positioned at spaced-apart locations beneath a lower surface of the bottom portion. A negative battery terminal is disposed in an opening formed in the bottom portion. The negative battery terminal has two battery contact spring portions for elastically contacting a negative terminal of the battery and two locking spring portions that are sandwiched between the lower surface of the bottom portion and the circuit board. The two locking spring portions terminate in elastically deformable locking portions that are inserted into, and elastically deformed to make pressure contact with, inner walls of respective ones of the locking holes.

    • An end cap seal assembly for an electrochemical cell such as an alkaline cell is disclosed. The end cap assembly comprises a convoluted metal support disk and underlying insulating sealing disk. The convoluted support disk has a downwardly extending wall with at least one aperture therethrough which preferably faces the ambient environment. The insulating disk has a slanted downwardly extending wall forming a rupturable membrane which underlies and abuts the inside surface of the downwardly extending wall of the support disk. The rupturable membrane is slanted downwardly at an acute angle with the cell's longitudinal axis. The rupturable membrane underlies and abuts the aperture in the downwardly extending wall of the end cap. When gas pressure within the cell exceeds a predetermined level the rupturable membrane pushes through said aperture and ruptures allowing gas to escape therefrom to the environment. A separate terminal plate can be stacked onto the metal support disk and welded thereto.
