    • The present invention provides an image processing technology for detecting the motion vector of an image pickup target with increased accuracy. Disclosed is an image processing apparatus that includes: an image processing buffer for storing images that are input from a plurality of image pickup devices; a distance image calculation image processing section for acquiring a disparity image between a first image, which is picked up by an image pickup device and stored in the image processing buffer, and a second image, which is simultaneously picked up by another image pickup device that corresponds to the image pickup device used to pick up the first image; and a motion vector calculation image processing section for acquiring a motion vector image between the first image and a third image, which is picked up with a time lag by the image pickup device used to pick up the first image.

    • In conventional systems using an onboard camera disposed rearward of a vehicle for recognizing an object surrounding the vehicle, the object is recognized by the camera disposed rearward of the vehicle. In the image recognized by the camera, a road surface marking taken by the camera appears at a lower end of a screen of the image, which makes it difficult to predict a specific position in the screen from which the road surface marking appears. Further, an angle of depression of the camera is large, and it is a short period of time to acquire the object. Therefore, it is difficult to improve a recognition rate and to reduce false recognition. Results of recognition (type, position, angle, recognition time) made by a camera disposed forward of the vehicle, are used to predict a specific timing and a specific position of a field of view of a camera disposed rearward of the vehicle, at which the object appears. Parameters of recognition logic of the rearwardly disposed camera and processing timing are then optimally adjusted. Further, luminance information of the image from the forwardly disposed camera is used to predict possible changes to be made in luminance of the field of view of the rearwardly disposed camera. Gain and exposure time of the rearwardly disposed camera are then adjusted.

    • An object of this invention is to make one image pickup device sharable, with high reliability, among the multiple application programs that dynamically vary camera parameters. In order to achieve this object, the invention includes an image pickup device 6 that acquires images, an image pickup device controller 13 that accepts image acquisition requests from the multiple application programs 151 to 15N and controls the image pickup device, an application scheduler 14 that selects application programs to be executed. The invention further includes an element 17 that stores the image data volumes and image data acquisition rates required in the multiple application programs 151 to 15N, an element that selects multiple concurrently executable application programs on the basis of the above image data volumes and image data acquisition rates, and an image acquisition scheduler 14 that determines the timing and intervals at which the multiple executable application programs repeat acquiring image data from one image pickup device without overlapping in terms of time. In addition, an operations section that explicitly presents concurrently executable application programs to a user and commands the startup of these programs is displayed on a navigation screen menu 19.
