    • A vacuum article pickup apparatus is disclosed which is capable of picking up single articles such as pieces of mail or sheets of paper, from a random assortment of articles of varying sizes, shapes, weights, thicknesses, and porosities. The apparatus provides a vacuum gripper and a spacer which spaces the vacuum gripper from the articles. Provision is made for adjusting the height of the vacuum gripper and the spacer to compensate for differences in height of the random assortment of articles. Provision is also made for locking the vacuum gripper and the spacer at this height during the engagement of the uppermost article, and for withdrawing the spacer from contact with the random assortment of articles after the uppermost article has been engaged by the vacuum gripper.

    • A plurality of magnetic elevator devices disposed along the sides of a vertical stack of magnetizable steel objects, such as sheets or rods, separates them and raises the uppermost one vertically. Sensing devices in a control system sense when the object reaches a transport position and actuate a transport mechanism to move to another location. Each magnetic elevator device comprises a magnetic structure (permanent magnet or electro-magnet) and a pair of elongated, vertically extending, laterally spaced apart contact rails of opposite magnetic polarity which engage the edges of the stacked objects. Each contact rail comprises a magnetic portion having a point of minimum reluctance near its top and a non-magnetic, low-friction surface portion (plastic or stainless steel) which slidably engages each object to guide it and to hold it spaced from the magnetic portion. The pair of contact rails cooperate with the stacked objects to complete a magnetic circuit whereby the objects are repelled from each other, raised and advanced upwardly toward the point of minimum reluctance.

    • The invention concerns itself with the automatic processing of metal sheets. These are placed onto pallets (6) in form of stacks (7) and are fed to a pallet storage (4) in form of a high multi-tier shelf coordinated to each production machine (1). Between the pallet storage (4) and the production machine is provided a transport device (9) movable vertically along the pallet storage, which accepts a pallet (6) with a sheet metal stack (7) or delivers an empty pallet (6). The transport device (9) contains a single-sheet feeder (11), for example in the shape of suction heads (20) which lift off the topmost sheet, place it on a sheet support table (23) and from there feed it to the production machine. So as to facilitate the disengagements of the sheets from one another, magnets (18) are so arranged that under their influence they spread the forward positions of the sheets from one another.

    • An apparatus for the peel off feeding of stacked printed items such as newspapers, periodicals, booklets or the like, comprises a number of open-topped containers for receiving the stacked items. There is furthermore a peel off station into which the containers are moved for the removal of the printed items therein. Each such container for printed items has a bottom shelf with device for guiding it vertically and is slanted towards a removal side, at least in the feeding station. At least during the time it is in the peel off station the shelf in each container may be driven vertically so as to bring the uppermost printed item therein into the range of action of a suction device which cooperates with a scoop plate in lifting and sliding off the items from the top of the container one by one. The scoop plate is able to be moved between a position in which it somewhat overlaps the top edge of the container in the peel off position and a position retracted therefrom.

    • A seed planting apparatus (10) is disclosed having a seed distribution tray (11) with a top plate (17) with perforations (18) therein at the desired spacing of the seeds to be planted. Vacuum draw is provided to a vacuum chamber (25) defined by walls (23, 24) of the tray to hold seeds spread onto the top plate at the position of the perforations (18). The excess seeds not held to the perforations (18) are removed by tilting the tray upwardly, allowing the seeds to be gathered along the upright side walls (19) of the tray and discharged therefrom, with the inverted tray being thereafter supported on a holding pan (12) in an accurately located position over a planting tray or cell flat which is also held in the holding pan (12). When the seed distribution tray (11) is so located, the vacuum to it is cut off and the seeds are allowed to drop down into their desired positions in the planting tray.

    • A robot arm attachment tool for handling workpieces, such as information recording disks. The tool is self aligning, has enhanced load handling load capacities and is able to handle workpieces having sensitive surfaces without damage to same. The tool is attached to the robot arm so as to allow the main portion of the tool to translate freely in a horizontal plane and to freely pivot about a center axis of the tool. The tool centers itself over a workpiece to be lifted, and has a pressurizable chamber having a piston for allowing powered removal of workpieces which is connected to housings which in turn engage workpieces to be lifted. In operation, the robot arm first generally centers and lowers the tool over the workpiece. The tool then precisely centers itself over the workpiece. The free attachment of the tool allows the tool to tilt and translate in a horizontal plane as the tool comes in contact with the workpiece, for a precise fit. Once the tool has fully engaged the workpiece, the robot arm senses the stop motion, and stops. At this point a negative pressure system is activated securely fastening the workpiece to the tool. The chamber is then pressurized, causing the housing to rise relative to the piston raising the workpiece off its mounting structure. Once the workpiece has cleared the mounting structure, the robot arm is activated and the workpiece moved to the new location.
