    • Matching layers are provided, including: electrically conductive acoustic matching layers, methods for conducting electrical potential through matching layers, methods for manufacturing multi-dimensional arrays using conductive matching layers, and multi-dimensional arrays with electrically conducting matching layers. Matching layers with conductors aligned for providing electrical potential through the thickness or range dimension of the matching layer are provided. For example, via, aligned magnetic particles, or conductive films at least partially or entirely within the matching layer of each element allow electrical conduction from the transducer material to a ground foil or flex circuit. By using multiple electrical conductive matching layers, a gradation in acoustic impedance for better matching is provided while allowing dicing of the entire stack, including the matching layers and the transducer material, in one step.

        • A method of applying a matching layer to a transducer includes placing the transducer on a fixture and covering the transducer with a stencil so that an opening in the stencil allows access to a metal-coated, piezoelectric surface of the transducer, and so that the stencil is affixed to the transducer surface. A roughly cylindrically shaped bead of epoxy is extruded onto the stencil at a predetermined distance from the opening, and a blade is positioned upstanding relative to the transducer surface and located so that the bead lies between the blade and the opening. The fixture is moved laterally so that the blade rolls the bead across the exposed transducer surface to form a layer of epoxy thereon. The fixture can then be moved back in the opposite direction to its initial position if desired. The assembly can also be subjected to a vacuum before the fixture is returned to its initial position. If desired, the fixture can be designed to vibrate during movement. Also if desired, the epoxy bead can initially be placed in a trough designed to decrease surface-area exposure to the air. Alternatively, the fixture can be kept stationary while the blade is moved.

        • A compact horn speaker suitable for use on emergency vehicles has a rear-facing motor circuit, a horn plate, and a mouth section. The horn plate has a plurality of horns folded therein in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the speaker. The phase plug for the motor circuit is integrally formed on the horn plate and has a plurality of apertures each opening to a folded horn in the horn plate. The folded horns are connected to a horn mouth formed in the mouth section. The mouth section is formed of a thermally conductive material and has an integrally formed receptacle for receiving the magnet assembly of the motor circuit. The receptacle holds the motor circuit firmly in position and provides efficient thermal dissipation via the horn structure for heat generated by the motor circuit during operation.

        • A pad for transmitting acoustical waves between an ultrasound probe and a target surface.
