    • A technique of improving usability of imaging apparatus that can output an image taken by an imaging device for imaging an object to an external display device is disclosed. The imaging apparatus 100 includes a main body 110 and a lid body 112 that serves as a leg for supporting the main body 110, and further includes electronics devices such as a controller 200 within the main body 110. The lid body 112 is rotatably engaged with one end of the main body 110, and may take the first attitude where the lid body 112 overlaps the main body 110 and the second attitude where the lid body 112 and the main body 110 make a V-shape with one end of the lid body 112 separated from the main body 110. The lid body 112 in the second attitude supports the main body 110 that is tilted from the top surface of the object supporter such as desktop to form the straddle region MR where the main body 110 and lid body 112 straddle the object on the desktop. The imaging apparatus 100 directs its imaging unit 130 toward the object H with straddling the object H located on the straddle region MR.

    • An apparatus to suppress artifacts in an image signal. The apparatus includes a differential value calculation unit to calculate a differential value between adjacent pixels with respect to an input image signal, a diffusion amount calculation unit to calculate an amount of diffusion between the adjacent pixels on the basis of the differential value calculated by the differential value calculation unit, and a pixel value conversion unit to convert the present pixel value of the image signal inputted on the basis of the diffusion amount between the pixels calculated by the diffusion amount calculation unit. The apparatus changes the pixel value in consideration of the differential value between the adjacent pixels, and thus it can provide a high quality image signal without losing or misrecognizing the artifacts of the image signal.

    • A combination film gate for a continuous motion or real-time motion picture telecine that is also operative to pin register a frame of film for stationary scanning. A housing supports and transports a film in continuous motion past a frame aperture. A precision milled entry guide roller receives the film from a feed spool, edge-stabilizes the film, and directs the film to a precision milled entry sprocket. The entry sprocket is positioned prior to the frame aperture, pin registers the film, and directs the film across the frame aperture. A precision milled exit sprocket positioned subsequent to the frame aperture receives the film after it passes across the frame aperture and pin registers the film. The precision sprockets and rollers serve as film stabilizing means. Film jitter and weave are mechanically removed to less than about 20 nanoseconds without the use of complex expensive electronics. A pin assembly with precision milled pins is provided that can be lowered into the film perforations to hold the film stationary for scanning. The pin assembly provides a kinematic mount that repeatably, and reliably, pin registers a selected frame of film for stationary scanning.

    • A method of transferring a scene recorded on photographic negative film to video using a telecine is disclosed comprising the steps of:a) setting up the telecine so that predetermined waveform readings are obtained for a reference element comprising at least one gray scale portion comprising density patches corresponding to three known density values;b) storing the telecine set-up settings;c) loading a scene on photographic negative film into the telecine wherein the scene includes a gray card;d) using the stored telecine settings to effect transfer of the scene to video;e) determining red, green and blue video voltages for the gray card; andf) converting the red, green and blue video voltages to Transfer Points between 0 and 50 to provide exposure information for the scene.The reference element preferably comprises density patches which correspond to densities obtained in a color negative film after correctly exposing the film to a target comprising a 3% reflectance black, an 18% reflectance gray and a 90% reflectance white region, and standard photographic processing. Advantageously, the gray scale portion fills a full frame on the element. In a preferred embodiment of the reference element, the gray scale portion is horizontally arranged thereon. The red, green and blue video voltages are converted to Transfer Points between 0 and 50 to provide exposure information analogously to Printer Light values obtained for dailies or test print films.
