    • A liquid crystal display device includes a first substrate, a second substrate and a liquid crystal layer. The first substrate includes a lower substrate and a pixel electrode. The pixel electrode is disposed in a pixel area of the first substrate, in which a first slit part extending along a first direction in a first zigzag shape and a second slit part extending along a second direction and passing through a first bent portion of the first slit part are disposed. The second slit part includes first edges opposite to each other which are inclined at a first angle. The second substrate includes an upper substrate and a common electrode. The common electrode is disposed on the upper substrate, in which a third slit part disposed between adjacent first slit parts and extended in a second zigzag shape is disposed.

    • The invention is directed to an improved flat panel liquid crystal display (LCD). In one embodiment the improved LCD includes a liquid crystal layer that completely fills a gap formed between a color filter array and a thin film transistor (TFT) array. The TFT array includes a substrate that includes one or more pixel areas. Each pixel area may be divided into at least two pixel sub-areas. Each pixel sub-area is configured to have a different electric field than its counterparts, such that mutual compensation in the sub-areas decreases distortion of a gamma curve and improves lateral visibility of the flat panel display. In one embodiment, a first pixel electrode is formed in a first of the at least two pixel sub-areas; and a second pixel electrode is formed in a second of the at least two pixel sub-areas.

    • An LCD includes a plurality of electro-optical switches (pixels), each electro-optical switch includes a plurality of liquid crystal molecules, wherein each molecule has a first portion with a first long axis (a motional axis) and a second portion with a second long axis (a control axis). Each molecule may further include a third (shorter) axis. The first axis and the second axis cross each other and each axis is orthogonal to the other two axes. The first portion of each liquid crystal molecule has a positive dielectric anisotropy while the second portion of each liquid crystal molecule may have either a positive or negative dielectric anisotropy. The LCD may further include a first panel, a second panel that is opposite to the first panel, two field-generating electrodes that are included for each pixel in at least one of the two panels, and the plurality of liquid crystal molecules are interposed between the first panel and the second panel.
