    • A coating control system is provided enabling continuous operations, free of interruption for coating control purposes, while achieving desired coating weight and thickness profile for the various gages, widths and coating specifications encountered on a given continuous strip production line. In each of a pair of elongated pneumatic dies, a pressurized gas jet is controllably shaped and directed by flow-control means internally-mounted of each pneumatic die to impinge against its respective substrate coated surface with its major directional component of force being controlled to be perpendicularly transverse to the travel path of the coated strip across its full width. Adjustment of such internally-mounted means is coordinated with control of gas pressure supply and/or adjustment of die positioning means to maintain desired coating weight and coating profile across the width of the strip. Pneumatic and other crown-control measures of the invention are exercised along the centerline of the of the strip enabling production of continuous-strip galvanized steel product having improved tracking and handling properties.

    • Methods and apparatus for applying a plastic coating to woven yarn tubing to provide conduit for protecting wiring harnesses and the like. The resulting plastic coating layer is very thin so as to generally follow the contours of the woven yarn tubing, without filling in the valleys, thus minimizing the amount of plastic used. Woven yarn tubing is waterproofed by impregnating with latex sealant, and is continuously pulled by a take-up mechanism along a horizontal axis through a heated die and two treating stations in tandem. Each of the treating stations includes a coating pot containing liquid plastisol material and having a resilient circular exit die through which the tubing exits the coating pot to form a layer of liquid plastisol, and an infrared curing oven which heats the plastisol-coated tubing sufficiently to cure the plastisol layer. The tubing, while coated with uncured plastisol material, is not contacted by any element which would tend to deform the tubing from a circular cross section.

    • A jet stripping apparatus comprises a stripping nozzle positioned to direct a stripping gas jet stream (11) against each side of a steel strip (7) emerging from a bath (8) of molten zinc or aluminium/zinc alloy with a layer (9) of bath material thereon, means to supply gas to said stripping nozzle at a pressure sufficient to liberate a relatively strong stripping jet stream (11) therefrom, and surface modifying means spaced closely below said stripping nozzle effective to smooth the surface of said layer (9) prior to it reaching the stripping jet stream (11). Said surface modifying means preferably comprise a smoothing nozzle positioned to direct a relatively weak surface modifying gas jet stream (18) against the layer (9) that is effective to smooth the layer but not to substantially affect the quantity of material passing it.

    • There is disclosed an improved wiper head comprising a laminated wiper including a plurality of discrete layers of a fibrous material, an inner resilient solid block layer, and means for bonding said discrete layers to said resilient solid block layer to provide a unitary structure. The wiper includes an outermost layer in contact with the wire and a plurality of inner fibrous layers spaced from the wire and located between the outermost layer and the resilient solid block layer. A wiper holder is mounted adjacent the exit end of the tank and includes means for supporting the wiper in a path of movement of the wire so that the wiper outermost layer removes excess plating material from the wire.
