    • A variable-resistance attenuator having first and second resistive layers deposited upon an insulating substrate. Input and output terminals are electrically connected at spaced intervals to one of the resistive layers and a common terminal is electrically connected to the remaining one of the resistive layers. A pair of contacts are adapted to make slidable electrical engagement, each with an associated one of the resistive layers. Conductive bridging means mechanically and electrically connect the sliding contacts. Mechanical means are provided for simultaneous movement of the sliding contacts to change the resistance in a smooth and continuous fashion.

    • The invention provides a variable attenuator apparatus for high frequency application comprising fixed and variable resistance elements moulded together as an integral part on an insulating base supported within an insulating housing, the variable resistance elements being operated in unison from a common rotatable shaft extending inwardly of the housing. A pair of spaced apart stationary insulating substrate elements are supported within the housing, one of the elements including a shaft-receiving aperture through which the rotatable shaft extends, and a contact brush carrier is disposed between the substrate elements and mounted on the rotatable shaft for rotation therewith. Each of the substrate elements has an arcuate resistance track and a conducting collector track, and one substrate element also has a pair of fixed resistors connected between one end of the arcuate resistance track and respective first and second terminals of said element. A pair of springloaded contact brushes are mounted on opposite faces of the contact brush carrier, each contact brush being spring biased into sliding bridging engagement with the arcuate resistance track and collector track of the respective substrate element to define a variable resistor. Three external terminal connections to the attenuator network are provided.

    • A plug-in adjustable attenuator including a receptacle base adapted to receive different selected pairs of mating plug-in units, one for setting integral values of attenuation, and the other for setting fractional values. Electrically, the attenuator comprises a pair of series-connected balanced resistance networks, one establishing integral attenuation values, and the other, proper fractional values in a line to which the attenuator is connected. In addition to other advantages, employing separate networks for integral and fractional values of attenuation greatly reduces the number of plug-in parts needed to cover a desired attenuation range in small increments.

    • An adjustable attenuator comprises first and second inputs, first and second resistors connected in series from the first input, and a switch for selectively connecting the end of the second resistor remote from the first resistor either to the first input or to the second input, the output of the attenuator being taken between the junction between the resistors and the second input. Thus when the switch is in its first state, the two resistors are connected in parallel with each other and in series with the first input, providing an attenuation factor substantially equal to one, while when the switch is in its second state, the two resistors are series connected between the first and second inputs as a potential divider chain. This arrangement insures that any stray capacitance introduced by the switch is not connected across the output of the attenuator.

    • An integrated attenuation element having a variable attenuation characteristic for high frequency signals comprises a semiconductor body of one conductivity type in one face of which there are arranged two zones of the other conductivity type. The semiconductor body has a contact electrode on the face opposite to that containing the two zones. One of the two zones serves as an input or as an output and the contact electrode serves as an output or as an input, respectively, for the high frequency signals, and the other of the two zones serves as a control zone. In a controllable attenuation circuit means are provided for applying a first control signal between the input and output of the attenuation element, the output being decoupled from ground with respect to high frequencies. The amplitude of the first signal is variable in such a manner that for minimum attenuation it possesses a value at which the p-n junction defining the input zone in the semiconductor body is biased in the forward direction, and to provide increased attenuation the first signal falls to a limiting value at which the p-n junction does not conduct. Means are also provided for applying a second control signal between the control zone, which is connected to ground for high frequencies, and the output. The amplitude of the second control signal is variable in such a manner that for minimum attenuation it possesses a value at which the p-n junction defining the control zone in the semiconductor body does not conduct current, and to provide increased attenuation up to a maximum amount, the signal increases with a polarity such that the p-n junction continuously conducts current to an increasing extent.

    • A thick film attenuator including series and shunt resistances coated on an insulator substrate is described in which the first distributed capacitance of a lead conductor connecting a variable capacitor in parallel with the series resistance is compensated by the second distributed capacitance of a ground conductor on the opposite side of such series resistance. This prevents the attenuation ratio from changing with frequency for high frequency input signals which tends to be caused by such first distributed capacitance with high impedance attenuators due to the greater length of the series resistance. The spacing between the lead conductor and the series resistance decreases with distance along such resistor from the terminal connected to the variable capacitor, while the spacing between the ground conductor and the series resistance increases with such distance to provide the first and second distributed capacitances which change hyperbolically with such distance so that the attenuation ratio of the capacitance divider is the same as that of the resistance divider at any point along the series resistance.
