    • A system used for monitoring the flow and speed of traffic has a strip member (1) comprising electrical contacts (3, 7) on distinct layers (2, 6) separated by a dielectric spacer layer (4), such that, when a vehicle drives over the strip, the weight of the vehicle on the strip closes the contact through holes (5) in the dielectric spacer to cause a monitoring and/or timing means to be activated and subsequently deactivated. The monitoring and/or timing means is programmable to distinguish vehicle types and between a plurality of vehicles passing over the strip at the same time.

    • A housing assembly of the apparatus includes a roadway mounted base plate to which a housing is secured with the housing having a low profile and inclined side and end walls to permit placement of the housing assembly along a course of lane markers. The housing defines a chamber in which transducer and electronic components are housed. A collapsible road tube terminates within the housing in communication with the transducer.     • A pneumatic road tube, a pressure responsive transducer, and an electronic circuit provide a vehicle sensor mechanism for use in a traffic data accumulating system. A complex air wave is produced within the tube each time a vehicle axle runs over the tube, these waves are sensed by the transducer which responds by producing an electric output signal indicative thereof. The transducer output signals are coupled to the electronic circuit which amplifies weak signals and blanks out unwanted portions thereof to produce signals suitable for application to the data accumulating device. The electronic circuit may be present by an operator to accurately respond to the various types of transducer output signals produced by slow, medium, or high speed traffic.

    • An elongated traffic sensor strip having a plurality of separate segments each appropriately spaced along the sensor to monitor traffic in separate lanes of a multi-lane roadway. A sealed envelope encloses segmented pressure-sensitive elements and a plurality of conductors connected to the individual elements. Metallic plates are positioned in the envelope along the length of the strip for attaching the strip to the surface of the roadway. In one embodiment, the elements have a pair of conductor plates normally held in spaced parallel relationship and movable to contact each other upon compression of the elements. In another embodiment, the elements have a coaxial cable which produces an electrical effect when subjected to pressure.

    • AN INTERSECTION WARNING SYSTEM WHEREIN A PAIR OF SPACEDAPART TREADLE-TYPE SWITCHES ARE DISPOSED IN ONE OF THE ROADS. THE FIRST SWITCH IS ELECTRICALLY ARRANGED TO ACTIVATE A LIGHT WARNING SYSTEM ON BOTH ROADS. THIS IS INACTIVATED WHEN THE INTERSECTION IS CLEAR AND THE VEHICLE PASSES OVER THE SECOND TREADLE. WHEN ADAPTED TO AN EXIT RAMP THE TWO SWITCHES ACTIVATE TIME DELAY RELAYS SO THAT WHEN THE VEHICLE PASSES OVER THE SECOND SWITCH WITHIN A SELECTABLE TIME THE WARNING SYSTEM DOES NOT OPERATE. HOWEVER, WHEN THE VEHICLE IS DELAYED OR SLOWED THE WARNING SYSTEM OPERATES. ONE SET OF TREADLES IS DISPOSED AT THE RAMP TERMINAL AND THE OTHER PROXIMATE THE RAMP ENTRANCE. WHERE AN AUTOMOBILE ATTEMPTS TO ENTER THE EXIT RAMP IN THE WRONG DIRECTION THE SECOND SWITCH IS TRIPPED AND THE ALARM ACTIVATED. THE WARNING SYSTEM CONSISTS OF LAMPS CARRIED ON POLES ALONG THE RAMP. THE ENTRANCE TREADLES ACTIVATE WARNING LIGHTS ALONG THE HIGHWAY TO INFORM ONCOMING MOTORISTS OF THE RAMP CONDITION.
