A novel feature of the instant invention is the utilization of a side insulating support baffle plate, which not only provides the desirable independent support for the stationary contact structure of the modular puffer-unit, but, additionally, serves as a baffle plate to prevent the lateral dispersion of the emanated hot arc gases from reaching the side tank wall, and thereby causing voltage flash-over.

    • A completely self-enclosed, weatherproof expulsion interruption device is disclosed which includes a detachable, arc-suppressing tube assembly which can be readily replaced in the field as needed, in conjunction with novel spring-loaded expulsion actuation mechanism for quickly breaking a high voltage circuit with only a minimum of objectionable arcing across the internal tube contacts of the device. The interrupter is especially adapted for use with high voltage, manually operable, blade-type switches and safely overcomes problems associated with arcing across switch contact points during opening thereof. As the switchblade is opened and engages the actuating arm of the interrupter, current is passed in shunt relationship through the interrupter until the respective switch contacts are safely parted. At this point spring-loaded trip mechanism within the interrupter housing quickly breaks the shunt circuit within the arc-suppressing tube of the interrupter to thereby harmlessly break the circuit without burning or pitting of the main switch contacts. The trip mechanism also includes return means for reestablishing the shunt path through the interrupter after each operation thereof.

    • An electric circuit breaker comprises an isolating break connected in series with an interrupting break and opening after the interrupting break has opened to interrupt the circuit therethrough. Each break comprises relatively movable contacts, and one of the isolating contacts is mechanically coupled to a movable one of the interrupting contacts. A movable blade member carries the other isolating contact. Opening spring means responsive to the initial portion of a blade-opening stroke drives the interrupting contacts apart and also drives the first isolating contact in follow-up relation to the second isolating contact. The isolating contacts are constructed in such a manner that they provide a current-sensitive coupling between the switch blade and the movable interrupting contact structure that is of such a design that at high currents the switch blade can pull the movable interrupting contact structure with it during the interrupting operation, thus assuring that the movable interrupting contact structure will keep up with the movable blade during this interval.

In a third modification of the spaced metallic plate structure of the present invention, curved minor closed-end slots are provided adjacent the main separable contact structure to additionally magnetically promote arc transfer movement from the main separable contacts into the plate structure for increased cooling and deionization effects.

In accordance with the invention the said arcing path is surrounded by at least one loop of ferromagnetic material which has been found to improve quenching of the arc.

    • An electric circuit breaker for switching capacitive loads, such as capacitor banks or long electric power transmission lines, comprises a metallic housing having a pair of spaced apart terminal bushings extending through the wall thereof. Each bushing comprises a conductor and an insulator. A vacuum interrupter comprising an evacuated envelope and a stationary and a movable contact therein is mounted in the housing between the bushings and each contact is connected to the conductor in a respective bushing. A shunting switch for parallel connection with the vacuum interrupter is mounted in the housing between the bushings. The shunting switch has less current interrupting capacity but greater current carrying capacity than the vacuum interrupter. The shunting switch comprises a stationary contact which is mounted on one bushing and electrically connected to the conductor therein. The shunting switch further comprises a pivotable blade type contact which is mounted on the other bushing and electrically connected to the conductor therein. Operating means are located in the housing and comprises a first and second insulated contact rods which are connected to the movable contact of the vacuum interrupter and the blade of the shunting switch, respectively. In operation, the operating means causes the vacuum interrupter to close before and open after the closing and opening, respectively, of the shunting switch.
