    • Digital processing of current signals allows close matching of arbitrary time delay curves for a circuit breaker. An analog signal proportional to the current is sampled and digitized. Digital samples, with or without further processing, are used to select increment values from a look-up table for accumulation in a counter. The counter is decremented periodically to simulate cooling of the circuit being protected. The values in the look-up table are determined according to the desired time delay curve. Processing of the digital samples may include squaring samples, accumulating the squared values to form a subtotal which is compared with an instantaneous trip threshold, accumulating the subtotals for a time period equal to half a cycle of AC line voltage, taking the square root of the accumulated subtotals, and using that square root as the address for looking up the increment value.

    • A microprocessor based overcurrent trip unit includes an analog circuit for monitoring phase currents in the electrical interrupting device. The analog circuit is adapted to interface with the microprocessor over a range of selectable setpoints for instantaneous tripping and at the same time accurately monitor the phase currents even during a condition when the current sensing transformers are saturated. The overcurrent trip unit also allows the function of the long time delay characteristics of protection curve to be varied in order to provide better coordination with the characteristics of other overcurrent tripping devices in an electrical distribution system, such as a current limiting fuse, thereby enhancing the overall reliability of the system. For example, the function may be varied to provide either a fixed or FLAT, It, I.sup.2 t and I.sup.4 t functions. The overcurrent tripping device also allows for relatively wide adjustment ranges for the long time delay and short time delay protection portions of an overcurrent protection curve. In order to prevent any overlapping of the protection ranges, the long time delay portion is prevented from tripping the interrupting device prior to the short time delay portion.

    • A circuit controller for selectively connecting a power source to a load includes a non-overcurrent protective electrical switching mechanism and a conductive polymer current limiter connected in series with the load for limiting the current which flows through the switching mechanism whenever the power source is selectively connected to the load. The conductive polymer current limiter may include a plurality of parallel conductive polymer positive temperature coefficient (PTC) resistors. The circuit controller may include an electrical switching mechanism which, under short circuit conditions, remains selectively connected to the load. The short circuit current which is limited by the conductive polymer current limiter continues to flow through the electrical switching mechanism. The switching mechanism may include a contactor having separable contacts, and may further include a circuit interrupter, in order to provide a separate circuit disconnection mechanism. The electrical switching mechanism may have a coil and the circuit controller may include a voltage sensor. The conductive polymer current limiter may have an output which has a voltage substantially less than the voltage of the power source whenever the short circuit current flows from the power source and through the current limiter. The voltage sensor may be connected to the output of the conductive polymer current limiter and may deenergize the coil in order to open the separable contacts of the contactor and disconnect the power source from the load whenever the voltage of the output drops below a predetermined threshold. The contactor may be a motor-starting contactor.
