    • An input processing section reduces the content of an input video signal according to reduction ratio data, and the reduced video signal is stored in field memories. A display processing section reads a reduced video signal from the field memories to execute window display processing thereto according to video size SIZ data and video position data (X, Y). In this event, an input video clock generator, controlling a writing operation to the field memories, computes video size SIZ data from the reduction ratio data, and writes the SIZ data as a header, along with the reduced video signal, into the field memories via the input processing section. The SIZ data is read to be output to the display processing section and a display video clock generator for controlling reading.

    • In a digital data transmission system of the present invention, the total transmission rate which changes with the passage of time in a plurality of video/audio signals multiplexed with a plurality of digital data on a transmission path is monitored without allocation of individual transmission rates to the plurality of video/audio signals so that encoders are controlled only when the total transmission rate exceeds the maximum transmission rate. Further, the plurality of digital data are transmitted within a range of the residual transmission rate obtained by subtracting the total transmission rate of the plurality of video/audio signals from the maximum transmission rate in the transmission path, whereby real-time transmission of video/audio signals and transmission of digital data can be made consistent with each other on one transmission path without reduction in video/audio quality of the transmitted video/audio signals.

    • The present invention provides an apparatus that transmits the stereo and the surround sound information of the L-R signal without excessive attenuation at the higher frequencies in order to allow transmission of surround sound through a noisy medium. The apparatus includes a surround sound conditioner coupled to receive a L-R signal portion of the television signal for pre-emphasizing and companding the L-R signal to produce a conditioned L-R signal; a mixer coupled to the surround sound conditioner for switching the conditioned L-R signal at a predetermined value to produce an amplitude modulated L-R signal; and a synchronizing circuitry coupled to the mixer for maintaining the predetermined value in step with the reference value, wherein the mixed L-R signal is combined with a L+R signal portion of the television signal to produce a composite output signal. Furthermore, a method of transmitting stereo and surround sound in accordance with multichannel television sound protocol includes the steps of preconditioning a L-R signal; synchronizing the preconditioned L-R signal to a reference value to produce a synchronized L-R signal; and mixing the synchronized L-R signal with a L+R signal to produce a composite output signal.

    • A combination of broadband program materials, such as TV, plus digital communications services of all types, are broadcast to a cell in the same frequency band, such as 27.5 to 28.5 GHz. The combination of all the transmitted channels have a combined bandwidth substantially exceeding the frequency band. At least some of the channels are transmitted with two diversity characteristics different from those of other channels. In one embodiment analog signals transmit the broadband services, preferably using wide deviation FM modulation, the FM channels filling the band. By choosing carrier frequencies selectively, between 5 and 9 T-1 digital channels can be broadcast in each FM channel when polarization is the same. Differing polarization of digital and FM signals in the same band can enable selection and detection of the desired one of a full spectrum of digital signals, or any one of the analog signals.

    • A network terminal device utilizes a unique modulation scheme that enables the transmission of digital data over a wireless, cable or direct broadcast satellite TV channel without disturbing quality of television signals. A digital data stream of the network, for example, is transparently transmitted in the television channel in a superfluous sideband segment of the frequency spectrum using a technique, herein called vestigial quadrature modulation (VQM), that entails substituting the vestigial sideband of a conventional television signal with a sideband of a data-encoded signal, preferably being QAM-modulated. A sufficient portion of the television sideband spectrum displaced by the substituted data signal, e.g., to at least the 7.sup.th harmonic, is preserved for deriving sync information that is used both for clocking the digital data from the modulated data signal and for driving vertical and horizontal sync circuits of the television. A receiver in a network terminal device utilizes an interface that includes a channel splitter and SAW filters in each of respective data and video channels for separately processing the video and digital data signals. The sync signal clocks data from the data channel and an integer multiple thereof drives the horizontal sync circuits of a television set.
