    • An apparatus and methods for measuring and compensating for birefringence in a rotating ground glass disk (20) such as are employed in polarization based optical flying height testers. The polarized light (1, 3) impinges on the top surface (24) of the disk (20) and is refracted through the disk to a measurement point (90) on the opposite surface (25) from which it is reflected back through the disk (20) and refracted before it exits the disk (20) in a beam (9) containing both s .alpha.and p polarizations which are detected by a phase detector (13) which measures any difference in phase between the s and p polarizations. Any variation of the phase .theta..sub.G with respect to the position defined by the measurement point provides the birefringence parameters b.sub..parallel.,b.sub..perp. for the positions on the disk (20). The phase detector (13) measures the phase .theta..sub.G at a skew angle .zeta. defined between the plane of incidence (101), defined by the existing beam (9) and the incident beam (3), drawn through the measurement point (90) perpendicular to a radius line (102) for the disk (20).

    • A test apparatus for testing a plurality of magnetic recording heads. The apparatus includes a tool which supports a bar that contains a number of individual magnetic recording heads. Alternatively, the tester may contain a tool which supports a plurality of individual sliders. The tool locates the heads within a magnetic field emanating from a coil wound magnet. The magnet has a length and permeability that provides a uniform magnetic field for each slider in the entire bar. The test apparatus includes a probe card that has a plurality of probe needles which make simultaneous contact with the bonding pads of each head. The needles are coupled to a test circuit that applies a constant current to the magnetic recording heads and measure a change in voltage as a function of a varying magnetic field. The tester can sequentially test the heads without spatially moving the bar, thereby minimizing the test cycle time of testing the heads. Alternatively, the tester may test two or more of the heads simultaneously.

    • A coupling device for ensuring a precise alignment between a disk-drive suspension and a static-attitude testing tool along a predetermined axis. The device consists of the combination of a support post or ridge etched in relief precisely along the longitudinal axis of a disk-drive suspension, or a spherical-radius post protruding through an etched relief, and a compressive mechanism in a static-attitude testing tool adapted to provide a compressive force in a direction coincident with the main axis of the support post in the suspension. A conventional tooling hole is provided at a predetermined location on the suspension, typically along its longitudinal axis, to enable alignment between the testing tool and the suspension. As the tool's compressive mechanism begins pushing against the support post to impart a load, the point of contact between the two is determined by the fixed axial position of the support post and remains fixed even if the testing tool and the suspension are lightly misaligned, thereby causing the force exerted by the compressive mechanism to be transferred to the suspension in perfect alignment with its longitudinal axis, as intended.
