    • Apparatus and methods for providing both commercial-free content and commercially sponsored content in a flexible manner to various subscriber classes of digital audio radio are presented. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, lower tier subscribers can, for example, sample commercial free content as experienced by higher tier subscribers by means of flexible channel authorization. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention new non-subscribers can be allowed to sample some of the commercial content (such as, when, for example, a default UPC is stored in the radio before shipment) before choosing to subscribe. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, a digital audio radio (receiver) can include a controller operable to receive and store an Uplink Package Code (UPC) in the digital audio radio. The radio can be further operable to receive, for example, a broadcast Package Definition Message (PDM) that maps the stored UPC to a list of authorized channels (obtained via a broadcast Package Authorization List (PAL)) for that receiver. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, a method of channel authorization for digital audio radios can include assigning an Uplink Package Code (UPC) to, and storing the UPC in, a digital audio radio and receiving a broadcast Package Definition Message (PDM) that maps the UPC to a list of authorized channels (from a Package Authorization List (PAL)).

A solution is provided to transcode a signal from a first signal type to a second signal type to ensure proper interfacing between devices that may operate using different signal types. For example, within a communication system, a first signal type (having a first modulation type, e.g., 8 PSK) may be received. The transcoder then ensures that this signal, after it has undergone any initial processing (such as tuning, down-converting, decoding, and so on), is encoded into a second signal type (having a second modulation type, e.g., QPSK) such that it can interface properly with a device for which the received signal is intended. This transcoder functionality may be implemented within discrete components, or it may alternatively be integrated within a functional block of an integrated circuit. This functionality may be implemented in a variety of communication systems including satellite, cable television, Internet, and others.

    • A channel mapping system has a data source containing data indicative of the geographic range of channels broadcast in at least one selected region and a channel determination module that uses data indicative of a location in conjunction with the data source to determine a preferred channel. The preferred channel may be an FM channel. A transmitter is used with a portable media player to broadcast audio data contained on or received by the portable media player over the preferred channel. The media can be received by a corresponding receiver set to the same preferred channel. Adjustments to the channel settings can be determined repeatedly so that, as a preferred channel changes with location, an automated process or a user facilitated process can be used to change the channel settings on each of the transmitter and the receive. A location identification system such as GPS can be used to identify the location.
