    • Inclusions in a transparent panel (5) are detected by placing a light transmissive interface (3) in contact with the panel (5), and transmitting a beam of light (1) through interface (3) into panel (5). Within the panel (5), the light beam (7) propagates along a path including total internal reflections at surfaces of panel (5). When the light beam (1) intercepts inclusions (10) or other defects at least some of it is scattered, and leaves the panel (5). This scattered light is then observed. Thus, a large zone of the panel (5) can be inspected, with light only being detected in the case that it arises from scattering by inclusions or other defects.

    • A continuous gravity flow apparatus for heating and/or drying of particulate material is vertically disposed and is provided with an inlet at the top and an outlet at the bottom. The apparatus includes a flow passage for the particulate material which is defined between an outer housing and an inner housing. Each of the outer and inner housing defines perforated wall sections allowing for the flow of hot gas through the wall of one housing, into contact with the particulate material, and then out through the wall of the other housing. Manifolds are associated with the outer and inner housings to provide for uniform flow of the gas through the material. The perforated wall sections are positioned and designed to enhance particle-to-particle movement of the material to thereby avoid particle sticking and bridging problems.

    • A semiconductor light emitting device includes a base substrate, lead electrodes provided on the base substrate, at least one semiconductor light emitting element loaded on the base substrate so as to be spaced apart from the lead electrodes and radiating blue light, a connection member for electrically interconnecting the electrodes and the semiconductor light emitting element, a reflector extended from a bottom of the base substrate to a predetermined height for surrounding the semiconductor light emitting element, and a translucent cover layer formed in the receiving space for housing the light emitting element, the translucent cover layer containing a color-shifting substance for absorbing at least a part of blue light radiated from the light emitting element to radiate a light having a different wavelength. The reflector is made of a material having high translucency and high thermal conductivity on a surface thereof so as to reflect the light radiated from the light emitting element and form a uniform planar light, and the reflector radiates the heat radiated from the light emitting element to outside so as to cool an inside of a receiving space for receiving the light emitting element. Thus, the device emits white light outside by combination of the blue light radiated from the light emitting element and the light having a different wavelength.
