    • A high temperature thermocouple wiring harness and connector system incorporating multiple individual thermocouple probes replaceably attached through connectors to the wiring harness. Each connector has a wiring harness portion, a removable probe portion, and a fastener for holding the two portions together. The wiring harness portion has a housing and two electrical conductors connected to the cable of the wiring harness and having contact surfaces outside the housing. The removable probe portion has a similar housing, a thermocouple probe mounted on the housing, and two electrical conductors attached to the thermocouple and having contact surfaces outside the housing. The fastener retains the connector portions together and insures that the contact surfaces of the conductors are held together. The fastener is formed of a material that has a coefficient of thermal expansion less than the coefficient of thermal expansion of the connector portions. As the ambient temperature surrounding the connector increases, the lower relative coefficient of thermal expansion of the fastener in relation to the connector portion causes the conductors to be held together with increasing force.

    • A frame type electrical socket for connecting leadless integrated circuit packages to a printed circuit board is disclosed. The socket includes a rectangular frame member and four contact assemblies. Each contact assembly is designed to detachably mate with each side of the frame. The contact assemblies include molded-in-place contacts which are shaped to provide pressure contacts after they are molded in place. Prior to molding, the contacts are in the form of flat ribbons, allowing them to be constructed in the form of a lead frame. The socket possesses all of the features of molded-in-place contacts as well as having the advantage of being able to replace damaged contacts without discarding the frame.

    • An electrical contact assembly between two conducting elements disposed face to face comprises wedge-shaped graphite inserts (26) located in similarly shaped grooves (22) in one of the faces (20). One end of each insert (26) lies short of the end of the groove (22) and the other end is proud of the face (20), so as to make good electrical contact with the other face (34) when the two faces (20,34) are pressed together. The invention achieves good electrical contact and conduction of current in applications where this has proved difficult in the past. Particular examples are clamps for graphite electrodes and connections to steel billets used as electrodes in an electro slag refining process.

    • A self-purging, hydraulically actuated electrical connector for use in a hostile environment, such as in deep sea water, comprising an elongated receptacle having a tapered longitudinal chamber provided with longitudinally and radially spaced fixed electrical contacts and an elongated tapered member receivable within said chamber and provided with longitudinally and radially spaced contacts movable in a radial direction to engage the fixed contacts. Fluid pressure actuating means are provided for driving the movable contacts into engagement with the fixed contacts. Orientation means for the receptacle and the tapered member assure juxtaposition of the fixed and movable contacts. The arrangement of electrical contacts includes elastomeric protective covers configured and cooperable with the contacts to purge sea water from the immediate vicinity of the contacts.
