    • Composites of plastic materials for filling enclosed spaces are prepared by coating the surface of a shaped core material with a layer of expandable resin particles plus a binder such as asphalt. The composite is then placed within the cavity to be filled and heated whereby the rest of the enclosed space is filled with the core material and the expanded particles and binder. The core material may comprise thermostable expandable cellular material. Alternately, the layer of expandable resin particles with the binder can be placed in enclosed spaces in the absence of the shaped core material and expanded to fill the void.

    • A magnesium article treated with an aqueous surface conversion treating composition prior to application of a painted or photoresist coating. The composition comprises a water solution of about 9.4 to about 19.5 grams per liter NH4 ; about 50 to about 103 grams per liter PO4 ; about 1.0 to about 2.8 grams per liter Ca ; and a total of about 1.9 to about 4.8 grams per liter of ions selected from the group consisting of Cl , NO3 , SO4 , and is characterized by having a pH of about 3.0 to about 4.5. Magnesium sheet with at least a portion of the surface treated with an aqueous composition of about 60 to about 125 grams per liter of final composition of monobasic ammonium phosphate; sufficient calcium salt of a strong mineral acid to produce a Ca concentration of about 1.0 to about 2.8 grams per liter, and sufficient pH modifier selected as required from the group consisting of phosphoric acid and ammonium hydroxide to produce a pH of about 3.0 to about 4.5, has a phosphate layer promoting adherence of a photoresist material and/or paint to the magnesium surface. The treated magnesium sheet is preferably formed by contacting the surface with the liquid composition at a temperature of up to about 120*F. and rinsing the reacted surface in liquid water maintained at a temperature of up to about 130*F.

    • An apparatus for providing, in a continuous or intermittent manner, a superheated vapor of an organic liquid, such as methylene chloride, for reflowing plastic surfaces or causing a plastic material to flow onto a surface to create a film or coating thereon. The apparatus includes a tubular metal member defining a flow passage for both the liquid and gaseous phases of the liquid being vaporized. A vapor flow control member having a vapor flow orifice is provided at one end of the tubular member while the other end of the tubular member communicates with a source of organic liquid under pressure through an on-off valve. A source of electrical energy is connected in circuit with the tubular member through a switch operated concurrently with the valve whereby electrical current is caused to flow through the tubular member to heat the member to a temperature adequate to vaporize the liquid flowing therethrough. The tubular member is electrically and thermally insulated by a shield and a handle associated with the shield contains the valve and switch.

    • In a conveyor system for cylindrical objects, a gravity feed surface means is employed together with moving side rails or their equivalent, to organize such objects in a uniform manner as they proceed down the surface means. The system further contemplates such a surface means as a temporary, in-line storage section where the objects are permitted to back up, while being continuously biased forward by gravity; and in combination therewith, means for releasably retaining the objects against such bias to create a flow or stop condition as demanded by need; and most optimally, a sensing means for determining the amount of such back up for controlling the input of such objects to the surface means, and means for indicating the absence of objects in a critical area of the system, the operation of the retaining means between the flow and stop conditions being subject to such indicating means. Also disclosed in the combination, is an elevator means for lifting and transferring the objects between a series of two or more of such surface means.
