    • Disclosed herein is an electrically-heated transfer line and valve assembly combination which is particularly adapted for transferring molten metals from one point to another. The valve assembly is basically a cylindrical valve body having a slidable stem therein, with the stem being moved between open and closed positions by mechanical power, such as an air cylinder or hydraulic cylinder. In the apparatus described herein the transfer line and valve assembly form a part of the same electrical circuit, the objective being to achieve uniform heating throughout the entire transfer system. Specific applications of the valve assembly include its use as an end valve on a transfer line in die casting or permanent mold casting, and as a metering valve in cold chamber die casting of magnesium alloys.

    • An apparatus for providing, in a continuous or intermittent manner, a superheated vapor of an organic liquid, such as methylene chloride, for reflowing plastic surfaces or causing a plastic material to flow onto a surface to create a film or coating thereon. The apparatus includes a tubular metal member defining a flow passage for both the liquid and gaseous phases of the liquid being vaporized. A vapor flow control member having a vapor flow orifice is provided at one end of the tubular member while the other end of the tubular member communicates with a source of organic liquid under pressure through an on-off valve. A source of electrical energy is connected in circuit with the tubular member through a switch operated concurrently with the valve whereby electrical current is caused to flow through the tubular member to heat the member to a temperature adequate to vaporize the liquid flowing therethrough. The tubular member is electrically and thermally insulated by a shield and a handle associated with the shield contains the valve and switch.

    • A hot chamber metal die casting machine is disclosed in which the shot cylinder and gooseneck seat are constructed of dissimilar materials which have substantially different thermal characteristics. Means are provided which Vertically align the shot cylinder in the gooseneck seat and which hold the lower end of the cylinder in sealing contact with the gooseneck seat during the shot-making operation. Another means is provided for vertically aligning the shot piston in the shot cylinder. Additional means are provided for disengaging the shot cylinder from the gooseneck seat at the end of a production period before the gooseneck seat is allowed to cool down. The various alignment, hold-down and disengagement means automatically compensate for the differential in expansion which occurs between the shot cylinder and gooseneck seat and thereby greatly improve the casting operation.
