    • This operating means comprises a circuit-breaker closing spring, a rotatable spring-controller mounted for rotation between first and second dead-center positions with respect to said spring, and means for transmitting charging forces to the spring in response to rotation of the spring-controller in a forward direction from said second toward said first dead-center position. The spring acts to discharge and thereby further rotate said spring-controller in a forward direction when the spring-controller has been rotated in a forward direction past said first dead-center position. Discharge of the spring drives the spring-controller into said second dead-center position, following which the spring-controller oscillates about said second dead-center position to dissipate excess energy then remaining in the parts.Means is provided for closing the circuit breaker in response to said forward rotation of the spring-controller into said second dead-center position, and this means comprises: a mechanically trip-free operating mechanism coupled to the movable contact of the circuit breaker and a linkage interconnecting said spring-controller and said operating mechanism through a pin and slot coupling. The pin and slot coupling (i) transmits closing force between the spring controller and the operating mechanism during spring-discharge, (ii) allows the spring-controller to oscillate about said second dead-center position without actuating the operating mechanism, and (iii) allows the spring-controller to be moved from said second to said first dead-center position during spring-charging without actuating said operating mechanism.

    • A compressed-gas insulated circuit breaker including two spaced apart electrical conductors within a sealed housing, a stationary contact electrically connected to one of the conductors, and a movable contact connected to the other conductor. The movable contact is coupled to a drive mechanism comprising a contact rod secured to the movable contact at one end, and pivotally coupled to a connecting rod at its other end. The connecting rod is pivotally coupled to one of a pair of arms fixedly secured to a rotatable positioning shaft. The other arm is pivotally coupled to a drive rod, and the drive rod is pivotally coupled to a centrally rotatable drive latch. The drive latch is secured to a rotation means, and upon rotation of the drive latch, the drive rod is moved, causing a rotation of the positioning shaft. Upon rotation of the positioning shaft, the connecting rod is moved, causing a longitudinal movement of the contact rod and the movable contact.

    • An automatic transfer switch having two sets of phase switches, one set for connection between a normal power source and a load and the other set for connection between an emergency power source and the load. The transfer switch also includes two neutral switches, one for connection between the normal source neutral and the load neutral, and the other for connection between the emergency source neutral and the load neutral. Only one set of the phase switches can be closed at any one time, and during transfer of the load from one source to the other both sets of phase switches are open. Prior to a transfer operation, the neutral switch corresponding to the closed set of phase switches is closed and the neutral switch corresponding to the open set of phase switches is open. During transfer of the load, both neutral switches are closed before the closed set of phase switches open and both neutral switches remain closed until after the closed set of phase switches open and the open set of phase switches close. Thereafter, the neutral switch which had originally been open remains closed and the neutral switch which had originally been closed opens.
